    These are the section diagrams the students got to rework their sections from task 1.

    The individual students should pick one section and interprete their work in the way of the precedents relation between ground, roof, landscape, mass, void and figure.

    General Comments


    Structure and Geometry
    GL: „Make sure they don’t get too much into space. Make them go into
    structure and geometry“

    Walls, Floors and Surfaces
    Define precisely the relation of the sectional components in your design!
    What is a wall (a dividing element), what a floor (a walkable surface) and
    what a surface feature (a surface for enclosure)?

    Ceilings
    GL:“What would Borromini do with the ceiling in a space station?“
    Make ceilings and horizons different.
    Look at Renzo Piano, his architecture is 100% about ceilings.

    Topology
    Think about the feeling of gravity as a feeling of architecture.
    Be more rigorous about the topology and find out how how different
    topologies can relate to each other.
    Before watching 2001:
    Look at Borromini’s ceilings!

    Look at circular plans to avoid you are doing exactly this. Look at the
    Panopticon as an optical device turned into architecture. (Michel Foucault:

    Forms


    Bundt and Braids

    Thicken up the edges and utilize the voids!
    Lots of the projects have plans that are sections and sections that are
    plans.
    Rooms that diminish to a point can’t happen. What do you do with the walls?
    Articulate the floors, the walls, the ceilings differently- problem is
    surface articulation
    Keep the voids and the continuity of the floors!

    Pinwheels and Trefoils
    The common features of your project are radial symmetry, axiality and a
    strong centrality.
    All projects have the problem of relating the section to the ground and the
    interrelation of the space version to the ground version.
    center and periphery
    The pinwheel projects all read like plans, try to begin to create sections!
    Creating a hierarchy of spaces will be helpful, defining a main level and
    features of organization.

    Auroras

    The Auroras are defined by a clear outline and a vague inner.
    One of the projects is project architecture but has no walls, only
    floor slabs
    Relying on perimeter outline precisely but inner is not precisely defined
    Don’t make a figure and fill it up with floor slabs but think of it as
    structure and architectural elements.
    Define structure, apertures etc. rather than only massing


    Sponges
    All sponges are porous objects and defy the regulations of a conventional
    architectural section. Therefore the section on the ground and in space don´t differ
    much.
    They are non-central and the outside defines the figure.
    The scale promises continuous views through multiple spaces, but
    how do you define apertures, hierarchy of scale and the voids?
    Don’t use elevators if they destroy your section
    Don’t pick corb, mies and wright
    Get some hierarchy of scale and of voids
    Think about Poche in terms of structure!

    Cells

    Single surfaces define one room,, that is fully enclosed with a massive void
    inside
    The scheme either does not need or want Poche.
    All projects show a disjunction between sections in space and ground
    Start to think your project it from the inside out and you have to think
    about the floors differently
    Don´t use Palladio!
