The consistent use of the term “alien” as used to describe both an extraterrestrial entity and a human being in a land in which they did not originate illustrates the broader issue of what modern humankind defines as foreign and unknown and how we as humans interpret and address these subjects. In a world, and indeed a universe, increasingly shrinking by forces of increased communication, technological and transportation developments, and mass population and demographic changes, we find ourselves in an environment were international borders, national allegiance, and cultural, religious and racial identity become increasingly less immediate and important.
We as human beings begin to feel the need redefine our identity in what is increasingly becoming a global community. With advances of television and internet and international travel and immigration, national culture and identity, long a standard by which we define ourselves, is becoming increasingly blurred as cultural values, practices and customs are shared, reshaped and readapted by the global community. As languages such as English, Spanish and French increasingly become the tongue of the international global community, barriers of language become less and less important. As immigration brings such wide-ranging faiths as Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Confucianism into traditionally Catholic or Protestant regions such as the United States and Europe, religion also becomes less of an identifying factor.
We are increasingly becoming earthlings - residents of the planet Earth, and we are beginning to see ourselves this way more and more. If the myriad science fiction films were realized in actuality, if extraterrestrial aliens did invade the Earth tomorrow on either friendly or hostile terms, I believe that barriers such as nationhood, political identity, culture, and race would, to some extent, cease to exist. There would be no Jews or Christians, no Germans or Brazilians, no Anglophones or Hindi speakers - we would, for the first time, begin to ourselves truly as human beings, as united members of one planet earth.
Also Anyone Interested In Working On A Project/Idea of mine? Its called ADOPE, ANOTHER DAY ON PLANET EARTH. Im still trying to flush out ideas , but the main goal is to get the mainstream consumer american culture , you know the one that amuses themselves to death to start to think about their world and life in a new and refreshing way. Let me know ! Drop me a line , say hey !
