Beyond Utopia

Project: New fluidities
The prospect of inhabiting the planet’s oceans has fascinated designers and philosophers for centuries. The lineage of its narrativization can be traced from biblical references of Noah’s Ark through Plato’s descriptions of Atlantis, and into 20th century cinema with films such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Waterworld. These scenarios are typically underscored by themes of conquest and have consistently relegated the medium of water to an anonymous stage set in the sparkling theater of a fantasized utopia.
In contrast to these overcooked visions of order, our approach to envisioning a scenario for oceanic habitation is unabashedly anti-utopian. Loosely posited here instead are the terms of a recombinant urban morphology that anticipates the demise of existing coastal cities by kick-starting the process of their disappearance.
