    Polytopia
The human species is rapidly and indisputably moving towards the technological singularity. The cadence of the flow of information and innovation in...
    Now playing SpaceCollective
Where forward thinking terrestrials share ideas and information about the state of the species, their planet and the universe, living the lives of science fiction. Introduction

I have been thinking about the goals of this website.
Are we trying to create a heaven in space? This would seem to me to be a worthy goal, although we as a species have made a pretty miserable job of making any sort of heaven on earth. This seems to be the achievement of certain individuals, some of whom we may have met or read about and probably most of those who have reached this state, keep quiet about it so that others will not disturb their peace.

And the question of immortality. My experiences of immortality, and I have had quite a few, come when I feel I could live forever. These feelings do not have to do with my body or the world I live in. They have more to do with transcending physical reality. which includes all the machinery we have created to help us deal with this reality.
Also when someone excels at any sort of skill whether through gifts or talents or just much practise, I glimpse some kind of immortal realm through their efforts.

Are machines going to help us get to this immortal realm?. I personally doubt it but I do not want to dismiss this possibility. Maybe the Singularity which everyone keeps referring to is going to help us transcend.
Singularity appears to be inevitable and the examination of the combination of man and machine is obviously a major goal of Space Collective. I am curious what the result of the man/ machine hybrid is going to look like. Is it going to be some kind of “Iron Man” or are we going to create a Quantum Creature, a mixture of waves and particles?

I have been reading the posts with much interest but I do not understand many of the words which people use. It feels like a new language is being born out of the man/ machine hybrid and I am like a child learning to speak again. I am still trying to figure out what polytopia means which seems to be a goal of some kind or something to be reached for. Maybe somebody can enlighten me on this.

Thank you Holo, I think you ask seriously important questions that ,as always, do not as of yet have fully describable answers.
There is no doubt that the future in front of us is one of a singularity ( even if KK does not concede the point {see thinkism} ), whether the singularity will be a hard one ( a la R.kurzweil) or a soft one (as I believe we are already experiencing) there is also no doubt that a new and emergent global collective of shared and combined intelligence is rising simultaneously. Concomitant with this emergence a new kind of language is emerging which to some is still obscure and at times even difficult to accept. As an example of this language which to my mind represents a fresh form of cognition (based on the cognitive surplus of our current era as distinct from the Neolithic surplus of production) we may use the term hyperconnectivity. When in hyperconnectivity the flow of information is much higher than our normal capacity to address or indeed absorb said information in a cogent and coherent manner, part of the problem is that hyperconnectivity involves many humans (minds) correlated to many humans (minds) connecting via machines, a situation unlike any in our past.
Whether the mind/brain machines interfaces will bring an age of enlightenment or not is in our hands, which is where the Polytopia concept comes in. A Polytopia as its name implies, is a meta-concept representing the liberty of diverse minds in a hyperconnected situation. A polytopia can be seen as a seed for a new kind of human interaction, human organization and human evolution (though there is an inherent acceptance in a Polytopia to any sentient being, hybrid, cyborg or any other exhibitor of sentiency, AI included). A Polytopia is an organizing principle of reality in an open ended and open sourced manner, allowing for the free exchange and motion, flow and production of ideas, sensations, emotions, creations and so on. The hyperconnectivity situation and the rise of the global brain are introducing us day in and day out into the singularity, yet our minds require a home , a home in which we will live, a Cyberspatial home, an interconnected home, a home where freedom and collaboration reign supreme. For a truly C(_) transcultural event to happen we need bring forth a Polytopia and yes it demands both the effort, the imagination and above all the desire to change the state of affairs into which we are becoming. So to answer another of your questions: are we building a heaven? I take the stance that liberty in cognition, freedom of mind and actuation of said liberty, is a mental/emotional heaven of collaboration and interactive intelligence, and can be called heaven if by heaven you accept a transcultural event of global proportions in which and by which all states of mind have a full stake and possibility of evolution.
that is what a Polytopia can become, if we can muster our resources of mind and physis..
    more will come..

    Hear, hear, Wildcat.

The Polytopia is not as simple as a heaven - it will be heaven and hell and all inbetween. The Polytopia is exactly what we bring to it.

I think many on this site aren't as interested in the prediction of what's going to happen, as how could we envision the emergence of the Polytopia, with the information and minds at our disposal.

The body is machinery for the mind - well the mind is also machinery for........this is still unanswered.
What is happening in the world now is that we're creating a different type of machinery for the mind - lets say, an extension of the body's senses into telematic senses...stretching into the metasphere. We're creating a virtual body for the mind.

For a truly C(_) transcultural event to happen we need bring forth a Polytopia and yes it demands both the effort, the imagination and above all the desire to change the state of affairs into which we are becoming.

This desire also must be successfully transfer in the physical world into PERSONAL ways in which the abilities that hyperconnectivity are carried over and influence how we act towards ourselves and others in the physical world.

In other words, the Polytopia must enable personal action towards the implentation of the body of ethics that its structure defines.

Let us not forget that we are a small, small corner of the metaverse here at SC, and most people on the net are not hearing these ideas, nor listening, nor caring. What to speak of those who don't speak english, do not have a computer, etc. etc. The transcultural event is hitting most without them ever realizing anything's happening. There will be groups of people lagging behind. Effort must go into enabling as many people to use it to their advantage no matter what physical conditions they are under.

The Polytopia is not solely out there in space - there will not be any defined boundary between the "metaverse" and the physical world. The link will be multidimensionable and unique from person to person. The two have a very strong bond that I don't think we know everything about yet.

The Polytopia will not fix the problems of the world, but I think what we aspire is to how it can enable us personally to become responsible citoyens du monde and help humanity as a whole problem-solve together.

This dialogue here on SC is here to explore, examine, and map how the Polytopia (its heavens and hells and everything inbetween) will emerge, and define its uses, advantages and disadvantages to bring to it a better understanding and utilization of knowledge we have at our disposal at the present time.
