The International Space Station while not a Colony (lacking trade and permanent residents) is an important step towards a permanent space colony.

The Anartic Conditions are considered to be the best analogue we have on earth to outer space and the moon . This is due to the extreme temperature and the prolonged periods of darkness. As a result many of the problems associated with living in Space are studied in the Anartic Environment.

Currently the moon offers the most logical celestial body for a colony. The purpose of which would include mining materials, developing energy resources, and research.

The Moon Society website offers a large collection of video with information about colonizing the moon, sustaining life on the moon and gathering fuel resources from the moon. This web group provides links to a community of academics who have published work on the need for space colonization.

Colonization is the activity of a species populating a place previously unihabited by that species.

    Space Colonization:

Space colonization has been proposed as the solution for: a life ending earth catastrophe, a means to long term energy solutions, and the ultimate goal of human settlements.
Space colonization (also called space settlement, space humanization, space habitation, etc.) is the concept of permanent autonomous (self-sufficient) human habitation of locations outside Earth. It is a major theme in science fiction, as well as a long-term goal of various national space programs.

Approches to Colonizing uninhabited space include:

    Ocean Colonization:

    - Sub Surface:

    -Ocean Floor:

    Underground Colonization:
    Underground Cities:

Space Habitats are an alternative to planetary habitat. These are three approaches to space habitat design (click on images). Each design theorizes how graviational forces of the earth could be replicated in combination with organizations of colony activities, such as life support, manufacturing, and agriculture.
