pure becoming is the culmination, and eventual continuation, of an ongoing area of my research.

I'm interested in the ways in which our perceptions of reality, and the perspective lens' in which we view our world can be shifted and adjusted.

I believe we may be approaching an event horizon in the history of humanity that will drastically alter our reality and human consciousness. An approach toward a singularity, a moment of oneness. And I am interested in the range of narratives in contemporary culture that support, or contrast one another, yet all predict a new age of humanity.

This may be a product of our ever quickening technological evolution, of computing, of the Internet, of nanotechnology, biotechnology and genetics, which may result in a sudden takeoff of artificial intelligence. Or a metaphysical global shift in human consciousness and awakening of spirituality. A crystalizing moment perhaps catalyzed by planetary alignment, galactic rhythms, the shift into a new astrological age and many factors too numerous to mention.

I'm interested in the commonality of these visions, and the broad ranging implications they may have. At first glance our technological growth, computing and thinking machines, may seem at odds with the growth and development of human consciousness & spirituality, but I believe them to be intrinsically linked and inseparable.

I believe in the power of sharing ideas, of thought, of words, written or spoken, and their ability to shape our perception & the world around us. I asked participants to consider our approach toward this singularity, this "new age of pure becoming", however they defined that, and reflect upon what that could mean. I asked them to help me actualize and manifest this singularity through the documentation and repetition of their desires and thoughts, through their written and spoken words.

To actualize and manifest ones desires as we approach this new age of pure becoming.

In my creation of the written document within the project I chose to highlight, and exclude portions of my collaborators texts. It is my hope that a viewer of this project would listen to the audio recordings as they read through the texts, pausing at times to listen only to the voices. The written document serves as a unified vision of their many perspectives around the subjects at hand. There are moments in which the participants in this project have very conflicting opinions, and diverge quite dramatically from my perhaps utopian vision of what the present, and the future could hold. It was my hope to gather a diverse range of perspectives on this idea of an approaching singularity, or new age, highlighting what was shared yet allowing for difference and complexity in the message.

It is my hope that this project is less of a static document that references something external to itself, but a living continuation of these concepts. I intend for it to not to act as a manual, a how-to, or a top-down instructional set of information outlining how one may live their life. But rather a living artifact of the ways in which this new moment, this new presence, is already all around us.

It is my hope that this project continue to catalyze the change that it itself outlines, inspiring a sense of flexibility within our consciousness, and help in part to make room in the world for a reawakening of humanity.

The power of the individual to cause rapid change and transformation within society has never been greater. The tools of authorship, audience and immediate feedback that the Internet provides has allowed for cultural shift at incredible rates. This is especially true regard to memetic subcultures in which audience and authors are more often one in the same. We have reached a golden age of cultural shift in which the tools of creation and communication have never been more accessible to so many individuals. Soon every human on earth can act as shamans of culture in this blistering communications feedback loop as the number of devices connected to IP networks will be twice as high as the global population in 2015. ( Cisco Vni ).

Every Internet user is a shaman, an author actively shaping their own reality and acting as "priests of the eternal imagination" ready to "transmute the daily bread of experience into the radiant body of everlasting life" (Joyce). This notion of the 'eternal imagination' could be described as the metaphysical and technological phenomena of our collective consciousness. Every action one performs within the Internet rapidly dissolves and forms interference patterns and turbulence through fields of culture and consciousness, changing both the entire system and the user of the system in a feedback loop. The speed and density of this communications feedback loop will soon approach the unimaginable and transform human consciousness in wildly unpredictable ways. Brain computer interfaces and global bandwidth limits will become greatly sophisticated due to the accelerating returns of our technological culture and dissolve the boundaries between our individual consciousnesses. This is a system based on interdependence, co-authorship, and is structurally modular, nodal and analogous to spiritual notions of oneness and interconnection.

Philosophical and spiritual practitioners across time and cultures have understood the flexible and interconnected nature of reality as it relates to our perception and the power of such understanding. The Buddhist concept of emptiness or Sunyata describes that "Everything is inter-related and mutually dependent— never wholly self-sufficient or independent. All things are in a state of constant flux where energy and information are forever flowing throughout the natural world giving rise to and themselves undergoing major transformations with the passage of time." This rhizomatic model of perception dissolves an objective reality much in the way that the Internet has dissolved top-down models of authorship and authority across nearly every media, and has manifested the user as a magician & master of ones reality.

But what do I mean by ‘magician’ As Aleister Crowley states, “What is a Magical Operation? It may be defined as any event in nature, which is brought to pass by Will." And by that very definition Internet users are most certainly practitioners of magic with each interaction, each 'like', each 'share' a manifestation of the will of a user, an extension and expression of consciousness. There is a great power in that knowledge of oneself as a practitioner of magic, it enables one to act with intent and purpose, to manifest ones consciousness and thus transform ones own perception, thereby transforming all of reality. Cybernetic theory surprisingly offers a connection between these systems of magic beliefs and the manifestation of will, spiritual notions of interconnectedness and the Internet.

As Edward Shanken describes:

1)phenomena are fundamentally contingent
2) the behavior of a system can be determined
3) with regard to the transfer of information, animals and machines function in quite similar ways, so a unified theory of this process can be articulated;
4) by regulating the transfer of information, the behavior of humans and machines can be automated and controlled. "


This cybernetic strategy suggests to be aware of the ways in which action and control can cause change within systems, enter into a feedback loop with ones subject of inquiry and enact rapid transformation within the system and within oneself. Understanding ones participation in culture and the Internet as a magical act and with a cybernetic model of thought has a history as well aligning itself with shamanistic practices across "...several generations of nineteenth and twentieth century artists [that have] affirmed the power of the world to call forth an otherwise inaccessible reality and the ability of art to give shape and significance to the chaos of the universe.” (Bynum)

I propose as Humans, Internet users, shamans of culture and cybernetic magicians, we use our tools for rapid transformation in an altruistic and humanistic way. To occupy island Earth together and play Buckminster Fullers ‘World Game’ in which the goal is to “Make the world work, for 100% of humanity, in the shortest possible time, through spontaneous cooperation, without ecological offense or the disadvantage of anyone.”

Global Empathy VIA networked EEG technology

Emerging brain-computer interface technologies are expanding the range of human expression, consciousness and human potential.

I seek to dissolve notions of the self, attachment to the self, and increase empathy between people in order to reduce human suffering.

This hypothetical project involves a globally connected network of participants wearing EEG brain-computer interfaces.

By displaying the average of thousands, millions or billions of live readings back to the participants, their minds will slowly become closer to the average reading, effectively entering into an empathetic resonance feedback loop.

Through this I hope to enact a computer aided global awakening of empathy and compassion between people of the world.

Phrases like, "do you see what I mean" and "do you know how I feel" could one day literally become a thing of the past as the resolution of our shared experiences heightens through the advancement of brain scanning technology, virtual reality and the Internet. What could emerge from such a large percentage of the earths population reaching this heightened shared experience and synchronizing their brains together to the same wavelength is something I can only speculate about, but I expect it to have a profound impact on society as a whole.

Electroencephalography is defined as the recording of electrical activity along the scalp produced by the firing of neurons within the brain. Rather than measuring the subtly of individual neurons firing EEG systems rely on the emergent pulses of millions of neurons which all fire simultaneously in wave patterns. Amplitude, phase, frequency and coherence of these signals as well as rhythmic neuronal oscillations of the delta, theta, alpha, beta, gama and mu brainwaves are all measured with great accuracy.

Several consumer grade EEG scanners are now available on the market. the price point will eventually reach a level where most households have EEG devices in them and they will become as ubiquitous as the cellphone. in fact cellphones and personal internet ready devices are a likely candidate for the eventual global distribution of this technology. to this date many companies are in pursuit of this technology to aid in education, gaming, and the treatment of brain disorders.


The following infographic represents existing EEG technology including medical grade readers, MRI technology, consumer grade EEG devices, and an iphone EEG application. i anticipate a global empathetic resonance feedback loop to be an eventual outcome to the advancement and distribution of brain scanning technology.
