Comment on How to Use Twitter to Build Intelligence

TheUndying Wed, Dec 23, 2009
I can say, without any doubt in my mind that Twitter and other social networking sites have drastically changed my life and the way I gather my information. At this point I've completely forgotten how I used to navigate the internet and find relevant (to me) information in the first place. From science to technology, gaming to movies, I'm following up to 20 accounts for each field. I also have Digsby which combines all of my social networking site accounts and gives me live desktop notifications for each platform. And my mind is further extended with my smartphone apps which includes Digsby as well. I never miss a beat, unless I'm sleeping of course, but even then I usually have a podcast playing on my ipod dock which will sometimes find its way into my dreams :)

My real life friends call me "the gatherer," 'cause that's what I do: I gather information and present to those who care to know. Before Twitter I actually had to break a sweat to find things out before the majority, but with sites like Twitter it's like the information is being directly fed to my brain. And it goes even farther than that nowadays. Recently I've linked my Twitter account to my Myspace, Facebook and Facebook Group Pages, as well as my Digg.com account to my Facebook. This allows me to spread new information across platforms virtually instantaneously, and I'm simultaneously existing across different mediums of cyberspace. I literally feel like my consciousness exists outside of my physical body, mostly because I know that people are interacting with my accounts in some form without me even being aware of it.

I can probably go on forever about the impacts social networking is having on me, the community around me, and society as a whole, but I'll leave that to you. I'm looking forward to more of your posts.
