    Head, Shoulders, Knees and Mind
    There's been a lot of discussion on the mind/body relationship. Below are my newest thoughts and a few quotes from fellow space collectors.

    Actually these are highly evolved humans. They realized that the mind is merely an evolutionary tool - a method matter uses to evolve. Basically, the body uses the mind to sustain itself - get it food, keep it safe, etc. But it's not the only tool possible - so they did away with it and are exploring alternatives.

    ok, so lets imagine tomorrow we could rid ourselves of these outdated, eating, sweating, lusting, farting flesh bags by downloading our minds to a chip, or some other more advanced form of electronic storage. there, our mind could exist for all of time, and other minds who've undergone the same downloading procedure could plug in and we could assimilate each others knowledge at the speed of light.
    better yet, imagine if every mind on the planet were downloaded and interconnected so as to create a supermind, whose knowledge base far exceeded that of our individual minds, and which could transmit any and all information to and from any point within its complex network, like rapid-fire synapses.
    This disembodied supermind would be the sum total of all human intelligence, an unparalleled triumph over the human body...but how would it ever get smarter?
    Funnily enough, this would be the stupidest superintelligence of all time if there were no way for it to receive input from the world and continuously learn from it.
    maybe we never wanted a planetary supermind to begin with, but the point is, we'll need some sort of input, be it flesh based or not, to feed our minds.
    how would we imagine a new input system that allows us to obtain knowledge at an equivilent or superior quality as the first 5 we know so well? would we maintain all five? omit one? or decide we wanted to add xray, infared, and/or night vision? how would tampering with our perceptive abilities change our cognitive capacity?

    Consciousness could also be a coordination of many different self-perceptions, being (the consciousness) higher when the number and diversity of types of self perceptions (if there can be types) that get coordinated is bigger, and lower when it's smaller. Theoretically we know our five senses quite well (quite), but it´s also possible that we'll never know if we know or not how the different types of languages that interconnect work and what they connect and how.
    Maybe consciousness is not that easy to reproduce. And maybe ther is no mind/body relationship at all.

    Excuse my ignorance because I can´t distinguish it from my knowledge.

    Even so, I have a question that I often like to propose.

    What are exactly the differences between body and emotion?

    I said this outloud originally in Portuguese.

    Qual é exatamente a differença entre corpo e emoção?

    In spanish it would sound more or less like,

    Cual sería exactamente la diferencia entre cuerpo y emoción?


    And another question that just popped back into my mind.


    When will the artificial minds be able to develop their own system of representations?

    Will the artificial minds need one of their own?

    Or it´s just another obsolete limb to be left behind?

    And one more question that I read today, I´m sorry to be taking so much space,

    When it´s all over for us, will it be the capital that will continue to dominate?

    And maybe it´s not about the intensity of the sensitivity of separated groups of tissues and the connectivity of sections of the brain.

    And perhaps farting, eating, sweating and having sex is also necessary to discover the structure of d.n.a or the unified field theory, for example.

    I wouldn't say they are synonyms. Self-perception is an attitude which develops about oneself based on one's surroundings, peers, self-esteem and what not. Proprioception is the awareness of the body without one being mentally aware of it.

    I think one may affect the other—probably self-perception affecting proprioception, ie, let's assume I have a totally messed up perception of my image and I think my left eye is smaller than my right. This self-perception could impair my proprioception in that I have this gnawing feeling that my two eyes feel different from each other. (Just imagining this example is making me aware of my eyes, the movement of my eyeballs and my frequency of blinking. So annoying.) That's proprioception: feeling things you normally are not aware of in relation to your body—phantom limb is a good example in Wikipedia—or becoming aware of involuntary actions of your body. In self-perception you are also aware of things that may or may not exist, but you develop an attitude or opinion about them and voluntarily act on them.

    My interest in this thread was renewed the other day when i started reading about how teleportation will work. Yes yes, so Star Trek, i know, BUT it presents a very interesting perspective on the body and mind as essentially just a summation of atoms which can potentially be disassembled, transported, and reassembled with every emoto-physical characteristic intact. In one sense, it makes the mind body problem irrelevant, everything is contained in the smallest particles, mind is matter and matter is mind. And in another, it makes matter seem almost immaterial almost virtual in and of itself. The difficulty with human teleportation of course, it that, the position of every atom would have to be stored and the collection of atoms would have to reassemble themselves perfectly, lest the traveller arrive on the other end as damaged goods just as the original copy was being destroyed. Tricky business, but worthwhile thought experiment.
