I love this experiment and watch it all the way through, every time. When watching it I think, "I wouldn't conform like that guy! I am NOT influenced by pressure." But then I think, "Oh wait... yeah I would."

    "uh...1?" Great stuff.

I wonder if this peer pressure reaction with humans, is something we have inherited from the animal kingdom?
Being different, or being ill, or being defective in some way, threatens the group as a whole... and so the group often chase away or kill the odd/weak one.

Maybe that guy in the experiment thought that the other guys would turn on him and thow paper balls at him?

in response to meika, everyone has friends, specially when one dies. It may be or not be very hard to express the "unconvinient truth" by writing it, but it's quite harder to stand for it against the mainstream.

Yesterday, the 'last' portuguese surrealist, Luiz Pacheco, died at the hospital. He had no problem on writing anything he believed in, or on being inconvenient to others when he expressed what he tought. And he had a lot of friends, probably because a long time of his life he lived on friends small money help, but also because he always expressed himself without fear of what others would think, and he was a very creative mind, and very critical one too, even for his best friends. I think the most amazing thing about this guy, as for sure some others in history, was the integrity of his mind, always above the integrity of his body, allways above the food he migth get or not on his stomach.
