    Designing Science Fiction...
The course will be loosely inspired by the movie (and the book) The Man who Fell to Earth in which David Bowie plays an extraterrestrial visitor...
    Now playing SpaceCollective
Where forward thinking terrestrials share ideas and information about the state of the species, their planet and the universe, living the lives of science fiction. Introduction
Featuring Powers of Ten by Charles and Ray Eames, based on an idea by Kees Boeke.

Assignment 1: space habitat proposal (5.22.07)
    Project: Designing Science Fiction Scenarios
This space habitat was started as an alternative culture in opposition to the growing conservatives who are promoting a sterile earth. The group is not opposed to technology; rather they embrace it as a way to promote healthy environments. They are opposed to the way in which technology is used on earth as a constant enemy to the ecology. The founding group members practice permaculture, a study of ecological systems to suggest healthy ways of working on the planet.

The habitat itself is rather blob-like in form. The core of the unit is primarily storage, although systems for power and other necessary functions weave through the entire shuttle. The most visually interesting parts are the umbrella gardens. These green balloons seem to float above and all around the shuttle - a living sky to protect its inhabitants. These growing pods are quite literally farms and gardens that contain hydroponically grown plants. There are different levels and sections to these pods. The outermost level contains the radiation absorbers and is probably the most crucial part of the space colony. These plants are capable of absorbing enough heat to protect the shuttle inhabitants from harmful radiation exposure. The humidity within this level also creates enough water to be constantly recycled throughout the pods (a necessary step for successful hydroponics). The absorption of heat also powers the shuttle, in a way similar to how solar energy works on earth. The next level inward contains the farms where all food for the space inhabitants is created. The level closest to the shuttle habitation contains the recreation gardens. Inhabitants take vacation trips to these gardens, which have climates very different from the rest of the shuttle. They are akin to the extinct tropical rainforests on earth.
