my book was made entirely from notes i had taken throughout the class this quarter and scratch newsprint and misprints from seminar room. here's some of the process including images i had concepted and collaged that i felt represented the environment of re:hive and this irrational thoughts flowing through my head at any given time

The final video may have been a bit too much information to grasp at one time, so I've decided that over the summer I would spend time clearly defining how re:hive works and functions as a colony in space.

the idea was about redefining the way we interact with nature. I wanted to build a colony in response to the living environment bees have with nature. The notion of hexagonal spores that are both dependent and independent of each other for survival. Within each spore of re:hive there are contained elements found only in space and only on earth, so there is a hybrid of environments in which people are encouraged to live within. Some of the hybrids are brought about by UV radiation, excessive amounts of energy, asteroid mining, etc. the following video and photos will further explain how the colony thrives. In the next few weeks i would like to re-document this process and create a new video installation seeing I now know what I'm doing with the programs I am working with.

funny how naive i was to think that by changing environemnts I could change the way people think. And so naive of me to think everything is black and white. but now, i realize how relevent artificiality and misinterpretation is in my life. irony of being immersed in nature and beauty tangiblity, but living like robots. programmed to work, do what youre told.

so instead of making a project and acting like everything about nature is perfect i've decided instead to expose all of my unresolved feelings about life through a space colony. what i was before and where i am going. a story of social transformation from the normal to the absurd. 8 weeks and 15 different experiences to realize my final concept. The idea stays the same. A beehive environment. Same spores, elements, immersive environments, but an entirely new story to tell. One that stems not from my hopeful prediction that things will change based on nature, but rather, my realization and conclusion I've come to about humanity. Nature won't change us, neither will new dimensions, new places, or new ideas. We are fixed. No matter how hard we try, how kind we are, how hard we strive, people will always create adistorted image. society creates the individual. it is in our nature.

were human, so restarting life will only reingvigorate the society we live in now. hence the name, RE:hive, it is a rejuvination of life and nature through a beehive concept; but it is also the reinvigoration of corruption and artificiality.

everything about Re:hive is artifical, and so is the much world we live in. From the outside you have these beautiful cylindrical spores with holographic interfaces showing the environment one is immersed in by being with nature. Everything seems perfect. However, your senses are artificial because they are virtual, the space in which you stand in, this gravity, is artifical. so while everything seems beautfiul on the outside, therein lies a much MUCH deeper meaning inside. And by inside I mean humanity, the people that occupy this space.

    enter one of two environments:

    artificial
    real

it is the person's choice to immersive themselves in the artifical or absurd.
no matter where where you take nature, won't change the way people think.

    story:

Animation of beehive in space, camera rotates around axis, see spores detach from hive and move about. serence and surreal environment. Screen blackens, up comes text and explanation of hive integrated w. animation of icons. Very colorful. But as story begins to unfold, viewer is invited into one of the spores. everything looks so balanced in space- Golden ratio. As story begins to unfold, the viewer is invited into one of the immersive spore environments. camera pans in and suddenly you find yourself in the middle of (________). Every moment is chaotic, phony hosts lead a crowd of animalistic/robot like viewers, the mood is sarcastic. every moment is fixed, the hosts decide who prevails, who they like, who they dislike. It is the realization of how life is interpreted in space, and how, as much as we try to change, it is impossible.
Video transitions from normal to absurd. Reactions and occuring events begin to make less sense, confusion arises. Virtual environment soon becomes very real to the viewer. They realize this new environment isnt' far from home.

water- cold fusion. much of world’s energy problems would go away
cold fusion - pouring palladium electrodes into heavy water. can
release a large amount of energy.

icon too playful? enough energy and movement? energy extruding. take in // put out

hybrid of earthlike and spacial elements, came to conculsion that icons should be abstract and involve lots of movemement and energy.

Re:hive research // lance wyman paul rand japanese transit// suica dutch stamps JR

anxious to begin life as people who had no people.

icons also serve as narrative elements in storyboard

storyboard: icons embedded inside hive hexagons, flip according to environment

title sequence: balance in nature, word Re:hive disbands, parts break off yet everything remains stable when one piece goes another is still connected to the base. inside each hexagon an evironment is present

uv radiation entering into an environment//space

earth- in atmosphere- larger amounts of ultraviolet radiation. increases output of vitamin D into body = less chance of disease inluding cancer and threat of heart attacks. disinfects water can detect fire, ability for objects to glow.

Actual Elelemnt from nature // Where we came from
Elements found only in space // Where we can go

can't have all the elements in one environment together as it may cause a destructive environment- but same earthlike elements advances in nature.

continue idea about balance in nature- golden ratio found in beehives // hybrid of universal and eathlike elements.

some ideas connected to stories aka a deeper connection of where we came from

many solutions to problems and stories in nature come about from unresolved feelings - live video.

beehive- each spore contains one of five elements of nature, come and go as you please. upon entering, find yourself in an infinite space. the universe is endless so why can't the space colony be? everything located in colony is made up of the 5 different elements- wood, fire, earth, metalm and water. we are therefore forced to respond to nature to create our own environment, creativity and wit to make tools and shelter to survive. DEVELOP ORGANICALLY. man doesn't re-recreate the environment it creates itself.

    cylindrical colony
multiple combs serve a different function // mobile environment, create your own beehive in each environemnt. large beehive orbits the sun while each spore rotates in cylindrical sphere creating artificial gravity w/in the space.

    water- to swim/bathe/drink in
mountains- put everything into perspective, sense of retreat
    metal- to build
    wood- for shelter
    fire- ill think of something

loose trading no currency w/in networking.

    deprivation

something that incorporates a function or form of nature
golden ratio- re-creat the opening of a flower or cocoon and create a spacecraft that follows the same function

found the golden ratio expressed in the arrangement of branches along the stems of plants, and of veins in leaves. He extended his research to the skeletons of animals and the branchings of their veins and nerves, to the proportions of chemical compounds and the geometry of crystals, as well as the use of proportion in artistic endeavors.

s that it's ingrained in our DNA to see it as pleasant

a number of studies have shown that faces judged to be beautiful, regardless of culture, are highly symmetrical. Nature seems to have a bias in favor of balanced pairs — two arms, two legs, two eyes, two ears, two wings. Two recent studies found that greater symmetry in men corresponds with more and faster-swimming sperm.

rendering made on photoshop/illustrator using organic materials overlayed on shapes. 1st sketch..

how to create artificial gravity and therefore allow water and fire to coexist in the environment:

inventing an atmosphere of weightless dimensions- liquids transmit into shperes. each spore will be a shpere "ultrasonically" stabilized. "Iconosphere"- support artificial gravity and water. rotating while in orbit. as shown above. enough gravity to grow plants and hold water in a pool. (water pool wrapped around axis of rotation- Kalpana One)

I want to design a space colony where a community constantly moves, creating an environment in nature allowing ability to change. Why is it that we put ourselves in one space and call it home? My plan is to create a habitat in which people are allowed to engage in different parts of the world, from underwater, to in the sky, mountain, desert, and caves. It is a concept derived from the habitat of fish and birds. They are migrative, a community that flies together, and dependent on nature for survival. So my idea is to create a mechanism by which you can live and travel in. I want there to be fish big enough for people to submerge these mechanisms in and attach to these fish for travel. We don't need engines to move when we have nature to channel us. We don't dominate the environment; but rather, live dependent on eachother.

    ideas for inspiration:
    swimming channel
    diving
    rock climbing
    snorkeling
    surfing
    hiking
    camping
    bungee jumping
    sailing on a lake
following the travel of a fish or bug

    step 1
an exercise for building a creative flow- compiling a series of collages using pop culture, automobile, and natural living magazines. Finding elements of each and piecing them together in a way that is unnatural to our environment now do to gravitational restrications, but ideal for space travel.

establishing a name/theme for the colony- Rubicon- turning point, defining moment, taking a decisive step aka choosing one's fate.

    concept ideas:
    a) immersing yourself in the actual environment
installation includes sound, video, and feeling. Idea is to build a box, slightly bigger than the avg human size, in which you lay in. atop is a video mounted that guides you through the colony UNDERWATER. 1st person perspective- the viewer partakes in a simulation of what it is like to travel underwater. (not necessarily a box, but an intimate structure that is completely dark on the inside w. the exception of the video)

    b) building a 3-dimensional model of the mechanism that glides and travels underwater and comes onto land as a temporary 'home'. NOT lifesize. name: rubicon.

    c) creating the same mechanism as concept a but submerging it in water. something that can be thrown into the ocean and people can float in.

note: catalina- people travel by boat, walk on land. no cars in avalon. keep long distance travel in and under water.

nomadic colony- no one person is situated in one place permanently. the vehicle you use to travel is is also your home. people are constantly moving. nonterritorial. using animals to transport us. REALLY BIG ones.

research the currents in which fish, birds, and bugs follow.
dead sea- enough salt and we can walk on water? feeling of hovering and floating.

ideas based on greek and roman mythology
Ovid's Metamorpheses- creation of the world.
THE LLIAD, ODYSSEY and Virgil's AENEID .
    ability to morph
strong connection between man animal and nature

chaos below, calm above, the hovering sits somewhere in between.
