Your are right about Surface, but you can buy one from its site paying 11.000€ :P
The problem is that technology isn't cheap. The key is building a new ecosystem, a new window for the new digital world, and it's very difficult. A lot of hard work for a dinosaur like MIcrosoft. You can't trust on that company (did you see Kin? or Courier?)
But it's possible. Don't forget the UI because we need a global (used for all the people) platform, and as you said, Kinect is one product that can rock the house.
But a new window will come no more from the computer like pcs or macs side. Today we have more important needs like mobility, battery, speed (doing tasks)...
