    are you a Cultural Creative?
Are we Cultural Creatives? Not to generalize, but I do get that feeling around here. It's a good feeling. Cultural Creative. I like the sound of it!

I first encountered this term when I took one of those online quizzes that my friends were all taking (we are so interested in forming our identities from other people's ideas), What Is Your World View? The quiz told me that I was a "Cultural Creative". Its description goes:

"Cultural Creatives are probably the newest group to enter this realm. You are a modern thinker who tends to shy away from organized religion but still feels as if there is something greater than ourselves. You are very spiritual, even if you are not religious. Life has a meaning outside of the rational."

This is one of those rare online quiz results where I felt every sentence to be true about myself, and the term made me curious, I wondered if the quiz maker had just made it up or if there was really such a movement. Google, of course, helped me find these:

    Wikipedia
"This growing section of the population is admittedly spiritual and embraces the practice of spiritual values in daily life without formal religion (Anderson and Ray, 2000). Many adherents to the tenets of the cultural creatives tend to become familiar with a variety of religions and seek to identify with principles that are universal amongst religions. The intention is to search for universal, practical spiritual principles that have intrinsic value, and do not depend on ecclesiastical authority."

Cultural Creative is a term coined by Ray and Anderson to describe people whose values embrace a curiosity and concern for the world, its ecosystem, and its peoples; an awareness of and activism for peace and social justice; and an openness to self-actualization through spirituality, psychotherapy, and holistic practices. Cultural Creatives do not just take the money and run; they don't want to defund the National Endowment for the Arts; and they do want women to get a fairer shake—not only in the United States, but around the globe.

The Cultural Creatives care deeply about ecology and saving the planet, about relationships, peace, social justice, and about self actualization, spirituality and self-expression. Surprisingly, they are both inner-directed and socially concerned, they're activists, volunteers and contributors to good causes more than other Americans. However, because they've been so invisible in American life, Cultural Creatives themselves are astonished to find out how many share both their values and their way of life. Once they realize their numbers, their impact on American life promises to be enormous, shaping a new agenda for the twenty-first century.

Beautiful. It sounds very John Lennon, very Gandhi, very Khalil Gibran, very Isabel Allende, very Rumi. Positive, gentle, intelligent, and proactive. Sounds just right for our "post-ideological, non-partisan, forward-thinking" perspective here on SpaceCollective.

As scientists, artists, thinkers, feelers, students, and teachers, what are we doing to move humanity forward?

I did take the quiz, with the same results of course. I think your follow up on the definition of Cultural Creative is a lot more interesting than the quiz itself though.

Sounds promising for sure, and I certainly hope that it holds some truth. I think this is a term that will hold a lot of weight with our generation. Despite the "End of Western Civilization" being brought upon us by the hipsters ;) I feel like this is a generation bursting with potential for change and progress (Obama's going to sue me). Every time I make such statements thought I have to take into account that I live almost exclusively in East Vancouver, on the west coast of Canada, so it's a lot easier to believe that from this point of view . . .

I also took the test and tied 94% for Idealist and Culture Creative. There was a type of "Tie Breaker" and I was awarded the title of Culture Creative. But something bothered me in it's "blurb".

Life has a meaning outside of the rational.

Now I'm not sure how everyone feels but this just seem right. As a "self-proclaimed" scientist this isn't how I see it. I consider myself a spiritual person, and everything else I can agree with, but I also think that all things have a rational explanation even the things that we can't explain. I just think we can't explain them yet. Other than that it was a great read thanks for sharing here.

    Couldn't say it better.

Well, right here, right now we are in the process of bringing forth the Polytopia

    I second Wildcat's last comment.

This experience shows an oportunity to get closer contact to the conscience of our right hemisphere:

I understand that by simply achieving some of this understandings, basicaly we get to the concept that the only movement possible is within and inside ourselves as fractal evolutionary parts that, by human nature, reflects on the whole.

Hmm.. well, based upon this quiz, it looks as though I'm something of a misfit:

Postmodernism is the belief in complete open interpretation. You see the universe as a collection of information with varying ways of putting it together. There is no absolute truth for you; even the most hardened facts are open to interpretation. Meaning relies on context and even the language you use to describe things should be subject to analysis.

Many of the questions weren't well-worded or specific enough for me to give solid answers for, but I guess this description of a 'Postmodernist' is about 75% right. Unfortunately, I've mostly heard scathing criticism of Postmodernism by many people that I very much respect...

However, I honestly can't say I've ever used any of these labels to describe myself. Interesting how low I scored on 'Cultural Creative' though, especially since I agree with basically all of the characteristics and values detailed on the Wikipedia article.

I'll add that I completely agree with alienastronaut's perspective on that blurb.
