    Event Horizon - draft

The stakes as seen over the entire series so far have varied for each protagonist. Heap had an intelligence group run by its enemy. In Casa, the detective became victim and Thereafter was about the consequences for his romantic partner. Weather had a wait for execution. Cast was under tyranny. Time had the alien invader. Last was extinction. Strife had strandings on earth and in space. Through it all, the things that were really important could not be lost. The museum had confirmed that.

    Exiles (blurred)

Irie was looking up at the ceiling and saw the tops of their heads reflected. He felt as if he had just done a pratfall off of a ladder. Bunks was nowhere in sight.
Raider met Castle in the hallway.
"Is this what you were looking for?" He gestured toward Fran who was in the conference room.
"That should do it," she held up her comm showing him the payment and he nodded and left.
"Good to see you," Fran replied.
Berna wandered in. "How'd you get layed up here?" he asked.
    "Don't know."
Versa arrived followed by Pierce. "Got your alert," he said to Raider. "Fearless Fran, you put a scare into us."
"Looks like you lot oriented pretty well," Fran replied.
Raider looked at her comm. She activated Hali and Jet appeared seated at the table.
    "Who's the reanimate?" Fran asked.
    Jet smiled.
"The alien looks like a local manifestation of a very distant entity," Fran said.
Berna said, "Well, we know that there's a future in energy."
"And Cartel may do anything to stop it," Jet said.
The wall lit up with a large-scale scene from a galaxy. "This is the likely source," Fran said.
"So we send more ships to check it out," Pierce said.
"Or negotiate if it shows up in this system again," Jet said.
The surrounding turned into a starfield. He recognized the Strife. A swirl like the nebula around a black hole began to stretch in front of it then snapped into a point leaving only the ship visible for a split second before the picture vanished.
A loud boom startled Irie and what seemed to be an energy field which reminded him of the alien stood where Fran had been then exploded silently into what felt like a magnetic wind which was as quickly gone. The unthinkable had happened. Chinda had figured out a way to use shortspace to accurately throw bolts and her target had been the one thing that they all had counted on. He had a feeling that this was irretrievable.
"Shouldn't we get clear of this area?" Pierce asked.
"Correction may catch on soon," Jet said.
Irie stood and was dizzy for a moment. When his vision returned, he was back to normal and the others from his past were no longer present. Events had flipped things around several times for him, but this had taken him completely by surprise.
