In the 1970s space colonies were considered to be a viable alternative to a life restricted to planet Earth. The design of cylindrical space...Now playingSpaceCollective Where forward thinking terrestrials share ideas and information about the state of the species, their planet and the universe, living the lives of science fiction.Introduction Featuring Powers of Ten by Charles and Ray Eames, based on an idea by Kees Boeke.

EXPERIENCE
*plastic welded together at the seams under high temps and powered by a single box fan.
WEARABLE
*outfit containing heart-rate monitor that speaks to computer via bluetooth to initiate processing visuals program
* high quality cotton/plastics/other snthetic materials to ensure comfort and durability
*built in head phones at the hoodie sounds:
VISUAS
*visuals based on output from readings of high and lows via heart rate monitor
*created in processing
*line stroke/colors/colorMode/speed is all affected

the whole idea im putting together is making me intelectualize on a more personal level- it has brought up questions about what it means to be impaired and still have the opportunity ot give back in an impactful way to society.
working on book spreads- I am feeling the need to stay very organized, maybe check myself in for a spiritaul cleansing and mental one at that- so many components to fit in together- I am just hoping that it will all come together the way I imagine it to be.
i thought it would be cool to share with you what the final space i decided on looks like- It was handmade with plastc about 3 mml thick and ironed together at various seams
the total size: 25 ft long, 10 ft high,a nd 15 ft wide.
all powered by one fan.
i really need to thank Cameran Mcnall for inspiring me to get this project off the ground
sorrow don't see a function that flips these guys over
other visual renderings of the visuals to appear in the space:
I have been working extensively with the LA REMAP project that deals with the usage of mobile communications including GSM and GPS mapping..
this has been very inspiring in that it somewhat relates to what it is that I am trying ot achieve in my design experimentations. The idea that one is fearful of his or her surrounding, be it new or familiar and for a moment that individual has the opportunity to use a device that can somehow transport them if not physically at least mentally into another state of reality- one that is more aware and in a lot of cases unafraid to explore the unknown. What occurs in 'remap' expeditions is amazing- taking mobile devices, mapping a walking journey and allowing the public to access a participants walking expereince via webcam, without ever knowing , as participant, what you are showing to the rest of the world. In the same sense my project deals with the notion of exploring an uncontrolled nature that one may be fearful of and using the data based on the expereince to generate images that the public may become a part of. It is based on the idea of sharing/community/ and making ones place in any milieu more participatory despite ones unwillingness to want to face the ugliness or danger of a particular place.
what i have also taken into consideration is that I am developing an idea that maybe familar to the design field in general, but my objective in the project is somewhat personal- I am attmepting a lot of tries in areas that I am very uncomfortable in, even programming and architecture, but if in the end I fail to make everything function the way I am foreseeing the future of the product to become, it is well worth the try and the effort to go crazy for a little bit.
My idea of space collective is exctlly that- a COLLECTIVE in which individuals let go of the idea of the individual dog eat dog way of living...everything is to be feared in a strange new world, but why live in such anxiety, nature like the people around you is your community, it is your collective .
after hours of programming I have almost completed my visuals for display
there is a set range from lows to highs that are responsive to the data produced from a heart rate sensor placed in the fabric of the 'spacesuit'
what visuals change:
lines
colors
depth/width/height
placement on screen
lows:
thin lines
high transparency
less square appearance
slow/static movement
high:
thicker lines
high rate of change (overlapping of visual styles)
more rotundity of shapes
louder colors
volatile movement
the progress!
chose a black/white/copper color palette-
need to stitch together but once its done- the white will glow and the copper will shine in the light!
the following are notes from the early beginnings of the concepting of this project as I am beginning to question what shapes and forms make more sense with what it is this project is really all about- about FEELING and allowing the environment to somehow be allowed to feed into the skin, affect the body in some internal/external way
fabrics are opaque and have some sort of metallic element ot them that would allow light to bounce off nicely- although the participant does not directlly expereince the visuals, anyone curious enough to step into that environment has the opportunity to enjoy another visual expereince- the creator-the suit-the body that is helping others to see another world.
I picked up an article a couple years ago after hearing about siggraph and an intelligent clothing exhibition and in my search to find out more i discovered this HUG SUIT......
Send A Hug Via SMS
Monday, August 28th, 2006
Sometimes we just yearn for that physical connection and technology clothing company CuteCircuit understands that. Thats why they invented the Hug Shirt which allows you to exchange the physical sensation of a hug over long distances. All you need is the shirt embedded with special sensors, a java enabled bluetooth handset and a warm compassionate heart. Simply put on the shirt, give yourself a hug and let the removable sensors beam the temperature and pressure data to your mobile phone. Your phone then automatically sends the hug to the person you designated hugs to go to via SMS and actuators of wearing a similar shirt. f the other person or the sender doesn’t have the shirt she can just send an SMS text message, and it will be transformed into a hug! If you don’t need a hug you can switch it off.
