LIKE THE BOOK, THE POSTERS ARE PRINTED ON CONSTRUCTION PAPER. ATTACHED TO THE POSTERS ARE SAMPLES OF FELTED AND CARDED WOOL (COMBED, FLUFFY WOOL).

I CREATED MY POD PROJECT ASSUMING THAT WE WOULD NOT HAVE CREATED GRAVITY IN SPACE. I'M WARMING UP TO THE IDEA OF FLOATING AROUND BUT I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO HAVE THE OPTION OF BEING HELD IN PLACE INSIDE A PERSONAL POD. THE ENVIRONMENT/ ROOMS WILL BE SCREEN BASED AND INTERACTIVE, TACTILE MULTI TOUCH INGTERFACES. PEOPLE CAN MANIPULATE THEIR ENVIRONMENTS BY TOUCHING THE SCREENS AND THE PERSONAL POD IS MUCH LIKE A PERSONAL TENT.
AS A RESULT I WILL DESIGN A BOOK AND A PERSONAL POD WHICH WILL BE OF ACTUAL SIZE AND INSTALLED FOR VIEWING.
THE POD will be hand sewn and crafted out of white cotton fabric and metal wires for structure. it will be cocoon shaped and hung from the ceiling and the back wall. Some form of life-size figure will be inside representing the size of the pod and how it works. The structure will be lit revealing the shape of the figure inside.
THE BOOK will explain the project and document the process of the project. I will include the entries in this blog along with illustrations and photography explaining both the experience inside the pod as well as the experience in the space collective.

SLEEPING BAG
I like sleeping bags, they are wide and flexible enough to fit me comfortably but at the same time it holds my body in place as I sleep. I tend to sleep like Dracula so the fact that I’m not able to make large/wide movements doesn’t bother me. I do not like my face to be covered though.
KEPENEK, FELT MANTLE
Used by herdsmen in Anatolia, Turkey as a one-person tent/sleeping bag while in the wilderness. The Kepenek is felted in one piece and the material is sheep wool. Felted wool fabric adapts to the body of the wearer and could even be felted directly onto the body of the person using the clothing for the ultimate fit.
DRE WAPENAAR TREETENT
I like the fact that the pod is hanging form a tree. I would like my personal pod to be hanging as well, but it would be more like a sleeping bag in terms of size. I really like the drop shape of the tent.

THE HAMMOCK
I like the idea of wrapping myself in a hammock to take a nap. They are airy so I can breathe and they are quite comfrotable as well. I like anything that will allow me to sleep comfortably outside.

All my proposals are of peaceful environments, places to relax rather than places to be entertained. There is too much stimuli around us now as it is, I think people need to re-connect with nature and learn/appreciate doing nothing. It's a beeautiful thing to be able to sit in nature and observe.
If the Space Collective would be a group experience I would like it to be a way of experiencing nature but have the nature be controlled, much like on an island. There would be a lot of windows so people could enjoy sunshine and see what goes on outside. There would have to be some form of garden where people could grow food and it would also function as a way of cleaning the air. It would have to be a self-sustaining system like in Biosphere 2 and it would have to provide sufficient food-sources. I’m very much into the idea that each person has a hammock/pod-like thing to sleep in. It would be wrapped around the body so people would stay in place. These pods would be surrounded by nature and in a sense a personal tent. A few issues come to mind however. Would we bring animals, what would we do with all the waste, how could we recycle everything, would there be a way around zero gravity, how do plant life react to zero gravity, would we grow all our food including meat (see Tissue Culture & Art Project below) or would all be vegans and the questions goes on...

My second option would also be intended for a shorter period of time as a recuperating experience. It would primarily be an experience for a single person but it would be in the form of a room. There would be a large window in the room so the person could enjoy sunshine and a view. All other walls would be covered with screens that would show imagery of nature (both computer generated and actual). The screens would be multi touch interfaces so the person could control imagery and even turn it off. Much like the Skinner Box mentioned below, the environment would be controlled in terms of humidity, temperature, sound and scent. Each person would be able to decide these things according to preference to give the illusion of being in nature. There would have to be some form of plant life in these rooms as well, perhaps floating through the room in closed pods that could be opened. It would be ideal if these plants were edible and the source of food while in space.

45% of all people who experience zero gravity also experience space sickness from being weightless. Therefore my third option deals with experiencing nature through the mind. This would not be a permanent living situation but a place to recuperate. The place itself would be minimalist and each person would be assigned a personal pod that would fit the body rather snugly, to avoid bobbing around. The body would be hooked up to an IV device and exposed to scents, images and tactile experiences all relating to nature. It could be 3-D artificial images of naturelike objects much like Casey Reas work, to watch a texture slowly evolve or an actual nature experience such as experiencing a place on earth or perhaps going inside an ant farm. Ideally scents, humidity, temperature, sound, the feel of objects would follow the imagery.
