    The Tipping Point 1.2
    Project: Emergence and Navigating Space
    Project 1: Concept (Revision)

When I thought more about this project and about relating it to emergence, my mind came to social emergence and the impact that reading "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell had on my view of fads and marketing and how certain things like Tickle-me-Elmo or Facebook social networking sites catch on. I also had an internship last quarter at Fanscape in the grassroots department doing online viral marketing.

My revised concept is to create an emergence program based on the idea of "The Tipping Point" about how little things can make a big difference. The book explores how "social epidemics work, whether they are fashion trends, diseases, or behavior patterns such as crime..." It would show the epidemic in action in how it starts off small and certain little factors contribute to a huge change. This incorporates my original idea of using visuals to show statistics, with the program based on variable numbers, however this idea further incorporates the theme of emergence because the social epidemics essentially are emerging trends. It will show human behavior, but it will also end up having the capacity to show the behavior of other natural systems as well.

"The Tipping Point is that magical moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like widefire." -the back of the book

The way it will begin is with little lines spread out moving and changing a little bit on their own, but some will have stronger characteristics that causes the others around them to imitate those characteristics. Others will follow. Then there will be a few groups that are growing, but at some point one of groups will take off and envelope all of the others and everything will grow and take on the characteristics of that one group. At the point that the trend tips and spreads, they will all become connected in a stronger way and it will be obvious that something big has just happened.

It will start out like Conway's game of life, with random positioning. Each will be a very simple braitenberg vehicle with randomly allotted traits. They will act like cellular automata and update based on their neighbors, but instead of following them like swarm intelligent agents would, they will imitate neighbors with certain qualities. I foresee the most difficult part of implementing this concept in Processing will be creating a viable and visible threshold from which one group will tip and spread to the others.
