    "Philosophical Bruiser" John Searle
    Hello everybody.

I am new to space collective and consequently have only had a limited exposure to what constitutes the dialogue of this space (and its quality haha). So hopefully my naiveté will not show too badly and I will be able to jump right into making some gears turn without embarrassing myself:

Seeing as there are a lot of brain enthusiasts in the ranks I thought that I would make my first post about something brain related.

In the interview linked above, philosopher of mind John Searle essentially summarizes his 1980 essay "Minds, Brains, and Programs". In that work, Searle sought to prove that no computer (at least those based on the John Von Neumann architecture) would be able to be sentient. That is to say that no artificial intelligence program running on such a machine would be able to truly understand in the way that humans do. He then goes on to make some interesting comments on free will which would undoubtedly send conversation in any stoner's basement into a tailspin.

If this piques your interest here is a good, albeit long (there are 7 parts), lecture for viddy:
[Seek to the two minute time stamp to skip the introductions]

Not just stoners but many proponents of the singularity should be thrown off balance by his arguments as well. Interesting stuff.
