    PROPOSAL FOR A NEW SOCIETY (call to action)
    Project: , Polytopia


    I was just reading about iraq in the newspaper, about the state of negotionations between the US and iraq (or lack thereof) and about some skepticism over bush’s troop build-up strategy. I can’t help but think this war seems so redundent, it seems far removed from my reality until there’s a draft and me and my piers are forced to face the situation head on. Hopefully that will not happen, but whether or not it does, I get that revolutionary ferver sometimes and don't quite know what to do with it. I just want to kick over trash cans (which is quite counterproductive, and the trashmen are certianly not to blame, in fact they are the saving grace of our cities) or make a sign that says “honk if you want to make the world a better place” and stand on the corner all day, or make a suggestion box and tour los angeles asking for any and all suggestions, preferably not sexual. Protests kinda sorta work, at least we all know we’re not alone in our discontent, but funnily enough, the majority of people attending protests are middle aged, where are all the young people? I’ve attended one protest in my life, but i know that most of my time is spent online sharing information, subverting the mainstream media and taking advantage of this unbelievably wonderful freedom everyday.



    This leads me to believe that the revolution should begin online, and we should start from scratch by ignoring the boundaries set by lines on a map and build our own society, an online micronation of sorts. We can be a nation of nowhere in particular, and here we can decide how things are run. We can draft a constitution and decide on our own national holidays such as The Day of Thanks for our Patron Saint the Internet (the patron saint thing is of course up for discussion). This would happen on October 28th of every year in celebration of the first ARPANET network connection between UCLA, UCSB, and SRI (where my hero Douglas Englebart invented the computer mouse and graphical user interface among other things).

    Any one can propose issues that will shape our society and all members of the society can vote on them. Issues can be anything from do we make robots citizens or slaves (I vote citizens, they can be our companions and help us in situations where our fragile flesh falls short), to where will we meet in the real world for state of the nation conferences and how often (because the real world should not at all be neglected). We can post videos of proposals or addresses, design a website and a passport, and it can start right here, right now. consider this nameless nation declared, what should we be called?

    I agree with you Megan, and I think this is generally how our generation feels, but have not articulated. I think we feel like our government or nation (the US) is dysfunctional, (i.e., voting once every four years), but we don't do much because it doesn't directly affect us enough. We experience a better sense of democracy online on websites such as http://wikipedia.org,  and http://youtube.org  (see, http://youtube.com/members?s=po&t=w&g=-1).

    1) It's interesting to think of the Internet as a way of life as opposed to a tool used to grapple with life.

    2) How does our Internet nation deal with the practicalities of our bodies? For example how its citizens get food to eat, etc.?

    Anyways, I'm down.

    wow, ok i think internation is the official name, all in favor say I, latecomers can always overturn the name if they propose a better one.

    the internet is still a tool for organizing the nation which only officially exists online. you can choose to choose to live in the nation entirely online and treat its emergence as a thought experiment or you can take its ideals into the real world because in all honesty, the only thing keeping us living within a designated set of rules, laws, norms, etc is the lack of better ideas.

    all better ideas, realisitic or fantastical, welcomed here.

    Here's an area of discussion: Who can be a part of Internation? If it's everyone, how is Internation different from the internet? How do we keep it coalesced and a definite defined thing?

    anyone can contribute to the internation. the internet is the basis for the internation, so i think the best question is, what kind of nation is the internet? and could the internet be made into an even more subversive space? how can we facilitate MORE crossovers between people from different countries? what are some good examples of online communities that we might want to learn from or involve in this internation? how do we bring together the resources we have, the people we know, and all the knowledge contained in all those brains? the main advantage of a nation that exists on the internet is that information, ideas, can be shared amongst disparate individuals and groups.

    personally, the motivation for this comes from a feeling of extreme fragmentation, which is in some ways a side effect of having always been a los angeles commuter and also has to do with the fact that i have never really felt part of a cohesive group of people, instead fostering relaitonships with individuals who sometimes have a difficult time connecting with one another because of the akwardness of not-knowingness. On the internet, however i meet all these people irrespective of their physical location and sometimes i look at my buddy list on aim and think, oh man if all these people were in a room right now, how interesting it would be. so lets get everyone we know into one room togther and learn from one another.

    i think another goal of the internation is not only to come up with new models for living based on the models made possible on the internet, but also to take those models and see how we can apply it to our physical existence. the internet allows us to act however we please without the fear of consequences, but in a world where any physical actions that deviate from the norm are considered suspicious, maybe the consequences are the most interesting part. so i propose as a first move towards developing a cohesive worldview for the internation, try doing something out of the ordinary in a public space and report back with what you have done, and what the reaction was. take pictures, films, sound recordings, etc.

    fantastic, since it is currently open to everyone I think I will be counted in the future population survey of the Internation, the name I like, I think it's a good basis for working with, but I also like the idea of everyone having a lot of freedom and control within this nation. For example, perhaps Internation would be the header and then we can vote or the internet can choose at random, a dynamic head title.


    I.e. Internation:the beginning of the end

    Internation: a new nation to change the existing world, or

    Internation:bigger than god, etc. so on


    Also, if robots are citizens do we punish them for robot crimes? Do we punish anyone for any crimes? I think it would be foolish and pretty complacent of our nation to not have any rules. And then my head draws a blank on which rules I was willing to stick concretely in my head and live by.... Maybe the Constitution not only can be amended and altered when there are discrepancies and special circumstance but also must be changed as the population grows and the times change? and maybe throw in a don't rape? I think that is one I would hope everyone in this nation would agree with.

    Megan, I can surely relate to you in that feeling of being brutally effed over by our government and this revolutionary itch perhaps will be satiated by some sovereign cyber world as long as it spills into the physical realms of "reality", perhaps mine will too.

    Furthermore, I think in creating this society it would be nice to agree that it is a creation to manifest change in the world's society. I am not trying to get all Miss America and ask for world peace (i don't know if I really want that), but as proven with the youth revolution in the 60's that changes do occur in large numbers, and such is the vastness of the internet. If this project can get a high enough population I see no reason for it to be called Internation:the revolution

    considering that the nine hottest years in the recorded history of the planet have all been in the last ten years, i think we should organize a rain dance. maybe we can do an entire day of raindancing all across los angeles and get others to dance with us. Though this may not be THE most proactive way of dealing with climate change, its an opportunity to cause a scene and get something moving. further detail to be annouced in the near future.

    ALSO in reagards to rules:

    I wonder what people would ACTUALLY do in a lawless society. to assume we need rules is to assume that human beings have some inherently negative desires that can not be kept at bay without a code of ethics or threat of punishment. how much of people's behavoir is controled by society and how much by their humanity alone? is there such thing as a human who's actions are not entirely shaped by the society they live in? (i just had to look up the word society in the dictionary because i got confused. as it turns out:

    1. the community, the (general) public, the people, the population; civilization, humankind, mankind, humanity.)

    BUT If we have rules than do we have punishments?

    AND i think at some point it will become clear what the goals of this society are, but i myself am not yet positively certain, and they can change over time. right now the goal is to figure out the goals, and in doing so, inadvertantly work towards them.

    ONE OTHER THING i think we are overspecialized in money and have an inflated faith in survival based on monetary exchange. How would we survive without money? do we have to revert back to tribal societies? can we send food to one another in the mail. my garden is dying because it's too hot out side, how's the weather over there? send me an avacado please.

    can we live in a microsociety managed over great distances? where does this microsociety begin and end as far as whats possible remotely?

    interesting point, but i think it is our innate 21st century desire to be individuals. scientifically illogical, maybe, but we no longer have a society built upon survival. a society (take ants for instance) who's primary objective is to help the good of the whole.

    digging further — an interesting point that rene pointed out to me a while ago was the ideals of the christian religion. they made a point of separating members of society so that once a week they were brought together (in church), giving them a sense of community and belonging. then they were pushed away again and isolated, making that community experience more meaningful. perhaps you can blame our individuality on the christians?

    Let´s play an experiment.
    Since we are still few in this Internation, and our bodies are mostly words, sounds and images in here.
    What about messing arround with language?
    With simple sets of transitory rules we could modify the way we address subjects and this might give us one of the primary bases to a separate nation too.
    First Idea.
    A spanish thinker called Miguel de Unamuno often complained of our tendency to use such words as anguish, freedom, or crime or rules all alone without saying the anguish of who, the freedom to do what, which crime, etc. And he said that this ultimately led us to think about "mankind" and "it´s problems" as a single homogeneous and impenetrable mass.
    Why don't we start trying to avoid this categories as we begin to discuss our goals and ideas regarding this project?
    Also, sometimes we use words and we don´t exactly know how or why. And mostly we asume that the others are understanding what we mean.
    That would be a good habit to break to begin with.

    I'm just typing what comes up after reading certain sentences....so I guess i have some short questions.

    To my opinion we don't run anything.
    So how would you suggest to run the new nation?
    A new nation..?
    Would you need new leaders?
    Would there also be someone that want's to maybe start a war?
    What is it you want to protect or what is it you want to become part of....?

    We human beings should perhaps stop running things...!

    A society is something different then a nation. Nations create the possibility to become nationalistic.
    A society is more a social thing. At least it is in the word; society.
    So.. What would you suggest?
    Run a nation or become a society?

    Any one can propose issues that will shape our society and all members of the society can vote on them

    So you are a democrat? Do you have differences in politics?

    I'm just asking question to find a new way of 'running' a society or nation...
    But think about it.

    And why would we need a passport?
    Do we need to prove that we are a member?
    Of what?
    Maybe we should also give greencards?

    I think if somewone believes in a thing like this, you should act like it.....
    But how ta act if there are no rules?
    So, then maybe it is a religion?

    Passports....including a personal number? Or shall we get a chip?

    So what is the meaning of a closed project and a open project?

    So Andres, You want more specifics in the language we speak, right? Maybe even no pronouns in said language.

    Also society is (at most times ) a collection of People in the same situation and may have diffrent nationalities thus this may be a little hard.

    But, first things first, i think government should be our biggest priority.

    I suggest a meritocracy and the rulers are given power based off of how they do on a huge examination process.

    I believe we already have that new society, its called the internet. :-D
    The problem is, its currently being fast shaped by the other society with rules from the other society. I think, having already a new society, we should fight to keep it free and independent instead of creating flags and passports, which are symbols from the current society too.

    Nevertheless we need ask why we need institutions at all? (not to mention laws)
    an institution is not a system that has an inherent goal of self improvement, only in such a system (such as an individual, or alternatively an intelligent machine) that has as a fundamental precept the goal of self improvement and thus the needed motivation to found a technology to implement its vision (such as the American constitution) can there be located a true freedom.

    which brings me to another question, does this new nation has a constitution? do we need one? should we write one?

    In response to Ruud's comment about leaders, I think in the Internation, leadership is constantly shifting from one person to another. Each suggestion is a leading idea until a new suggestion is made. My good man Ryan Huber once proclaimed that leaders need not be embodied because ideas can be leaders, and I propose this be the underlying foundation of the internation.

    It's a good idea you had 3LSZVJA9 to start developing the Internation through language. Personally, I'm 100% in favor of eliminating beertalk. I would rather speak in words that don't exist than participate in beertalk. Lately I've been trying to eliminate the word should from my vocabulary, and in particualar the conjunctions, should but and should have which imply an action that's ended without ever having begun, or an expression of regret, which is a generally useless state of mind unless paired with contemplation and used sparingly. Instead, anything that i should be doing i just DO without having to preempt it with words.

    But I'm interested in doing more experiments with words too, like words arbitrarily re-arranging meaning to displace. what know mean i? We could be a society of backwards speaking individuals. happens what see and backwards sentence every say.

    Also, as far as these semantics go, Internation is not a nation per say, it's a new word to describe a less territorial kinda social organization. We can re-define words if we so choose as long as we all have access to the new reference. Al proposed a project to get this show on the road.

    And in response to lapisdecor, it's true that the Internation is essentially the Internet, but I'd like to think of it as an Internet Micronation (thank you Meika), and a way of acknowledging the greatness of the Internet general. I think issues like net neutrality can be addressed here as well.

    Also, in regards to your last comment Wildcat, I think anyone can propose an amendment and perhaps we will end up with a constitution, for our Intermicronation or the Internet general.

    I think money and property are huge issues which we can begin addressing in the Internation as well. The Internet has already challanged issues of property, intellectual or otherwise, in a major way, and we have an opportunity to redefine or abolish the monetary system completely.

    Lastly (for the moment) the passports, flag, etc would be a way of introducing the Internation back into the regions we inhabit on planet earth and pointing once again to the irrelevance of territories. I'm in favor of dual citizenship, but also anyone is welcome to visit and we can decide to revoke all traces of the institution if we want to.

    Michel Elefteriades, a music producer/intellectual from Lebanon has founded the nation of Nowheristan. As a teenager he idolized Che Guevara and grew up to become a revolutionary fighting against sectarian parties and foreign interference in postwar Lebanon. After an attempt to assassinate him with a car bomb he fled to Paris and then to Cuba. Disappointed by what he found there he returned home and convinced 50.000 young Lebanese who were fed up with the world as it is today to become citizens of Nowheristan where "boundaries cease to exist and individual identities become scrambled." He turned the nightclub he owns into his country's headquarters, formed the 25 member National Orchestra of Nowheristan and started a website. Except for waging a campaign to stop people from paying taxes to Lebanon's corrupt regime, he is scheduled to meet in the spring with controversial Latin American leaders such as Venezuela's Hugo Chavez and Rafael Correa of Ecuador.

    A multidimensional co-enhancing, mind mutuality of evolving beings; The Internation is a cultural revival/endeavor with vast implications on the personification of the unique individual in a future based collective.

    Internation will seek to evolve beyond the infancy notions of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, financial status, religion and or any other related illnesses of cultural and or genetic nature.

    Internation is a “freedom first” expression of the original democratic nature of the mind, as such ideas rule according to selective evolutionary procedures.

    Internation is open to all, all migrants need do to become members of Internation is pledge the fundamental statement of:

    I am a sentient free being, in a free (sentient?) universe, all sentient beings are by implication perceived as such.

    Internation demands no allegiance of any sort and is by implication a-deistic, a-political, and fundamentally liberated from the constraints of socio genetic malfunctioning ideologies.

    I do like this idea but for the new nation to prosper, you must give people a reason to immigrate and flock to this new place. So i must ask, what does this new nation offer me? Why should i leave my current residence ( physical or meta-physical) to come to this place.

    This sort of reminds me of the 3rd Wave experiment ( actually they have very little similarities)

    But i do believe you lot, will find it as interesting as i did. . ..

    Lennon and Yoko had a similar concept & notion which they termed, 'Nutopia' back in 1973.

    Their declaration of independence for Nutopia stated simply:

    NUTOPIA has no land, no boundaries, no passports, only people.

    as two ambassadors of NUTOPIA, we ask for diplomatic immunity and recognition in the united nations of our country and its people. '

    Recently, Nutopia had it's first physical monument of Peace erected in Reykjavik, Iceland. Entitled the 'Imagine Peace Tower'. It stands as a simple, poetic, & beautiful tower of light, signaling to the cosmos a desire for Peace.

    Let´s make an open source declaration of intentions.

    Be aware that this could actually turn into a rich experiment,
    or just a sterile waste of time.

    We don´t need to make everything from scratch, but we certainly have to distinguish our true intentions.

    To think we are special and deny millenniums of human experience, thinking that we really live in an "unprecedented time" doesn't make us any better than a crazed electronic-church preacher with a new product to sale.

    I here call whoever sees an actual beginning of a good, real opportunity to try and do something valuable with this fresh institution, to fill this space with useful pieces of written text that might become, someday, who knows, a useful reference and not just a nostalgic souvenir.

    I would like to be a citizen of this Internation! Probably we won't all completely agree on definitions and rules of this, etc., but that's part of the beauty of it I guess. :)

    And Megan, about removing "SHOULD" from your vocabulary, what an awesome idea. I think I want to try it too. I'll go and look for my willpower now!

    TEMPORARY NATIONS PROJECT

    OVERVIEW
    The TEMPORARY NATIONS PROJECT is an installation which deals with the ideas of nationality, statehood and autonomy within the parameters of today's society.
    The goal of the TEMPORARY NATIONS PROJECT is to create, within the space and time of an exposition, a working micro-nation. The artists establish frontiers, create systems of communication, including symbols of the nation, such as a flag, crest, and emblems. The governmental structure of each nation in the TEMPORARY NATIONS PROJECT is determined by the participants in each setting. Included in the project is the creation of local customs, economy, cuisine, and cultural events. These auxiliary items are determined by the agreed upon government, and the other factors determined at the debut of the exposition.

    BRILLIANT! This is very much where i think this project (the Internation project that is) has been heading. Though not everyone that responded to this thread was interested in the idea of passports, flags, etc, I think it's really interesting to establish an experimental society with it's own customs and culture born out of the densely populated Internet community. The Temporary Nation Project, and other initiatives like it, seem to indicate an interest in experimenting with the possibilities of starting from scratch, which, in my opinion, is an appropriate response to the state of the world right now (more on this coming soon).

    I put on a fairly spontaneous and light-hearted event with some friends recently called The End of Money Experiment, which functioned mostly on the level of promoting more meaningful and creative exchanges in place of money, without delving too deeply into the realistic implications of such a possibility (here's a link to the invitation, the video documentation of the event has yet to be edited). It's framing as an experiment, however, made clear that first, it was only one possibility, and second, that the information collected through observing the proceedings was of the greatest significance. By changing the parameters this way or that, this experiment has plenty of potential to produce unexpected results that may prove really interesting.

    I have been mulling over many many things lately. One of them being the huge disconnect between the physical world, in which we're rapidly running out of natural resources, and the computational world, in which processors and bandwidth are falling in price and growing in speed. The physical world that surrounds us has been sourced into all variety of human invention (it's ceerazy when you realize how much of your life is made possible by petroleum), but contrary to the common luddite, it seems to me only appropriate that we should need more than ever to invent solutions to this increasingly complex and problematic world.

    On a smaller scale, Internation is an attempt to express the metaphors, economic, and social models of the Internet as an experimental society that we carry with us into the physical world through all manners of invention and cultural production.

    There is more elaboration to come and many more possibilities ahead, and there've been a lot of great things said in this thread already. Perhaps this it should be re-formatted into a new thread that synthesizes all of the comments and/or would anyone be interested in seeing this through as a project? I'm also considering starting a scientific community devoted to these sorts of experiments on SC.

    I really like the idea, even though there are lots of "but"s in the concept, and even though I think it is so hard for this Internation to go beyond the boundries of being a utopia. (but not impossible!)

    the idea is not even a real action now, but it is already being discussed ( I was reading the comments above) whether there will be a passport, a constitution, norms, rules, citizenships or not. and I think with these, we would be faced with same kind of problems that we are trying to avoid. (correct me if I am wrong)

    because in all honesty, the only thing keeping us living within a designated set of rules, laws, norms, etc is the lack of better ideas. (Meganmay)

    This is a great way of thinking, only for people of certain level of intelligence though. but for the rest (the majority), this idea is unapplicable. the majority need leaders to direct them.


    I feel like this idea has been around since the time of Sir Thomas More. There is only some additions with the improving technology and changing life styles. But the basic idea is always technology agnostic.

    I even presume, every single individual in this world (at least the ones who have a little bit of consciousness) had thought about the idea of having a world without boundries, without certain rules and norms, and most importantly without disparities.

    I just have one more question if I may. Why do we try to seperate ourselves instead of making an effort to change the REAL WORLD societies (or nations) that we have already been living in for years? There has been a lot going on and as it is stated in the main proposal, people of our age are stuck on computers and the online world. But still, if we really believe that this Internaton platform is the beginning for the desired changes in the real world, I think its worth trying, and I would love to be a part of it and change my pessimistic mind set about this idea.

    I was reading the Unthinkable Futures (a small game Brian Eno and Kevin Kelly played to loosen up our expectations of what might happen in the near future) and see this "Conceptual Trend" by Brian Eno:

    "Traveling as a process enjoys a revival. People abandon the idea of "getting from A to B" and begin to develop (or re-discover) a culture of traveling: semi-nomadism. Lots of people acquire super new faxed-and-modemed versions of the mobile home. It becomes distinctly "lower-class" to live in a fixed location. Fast forms of transport come to be viewed like fast food is viewed now — tacky, undesirable, fake."

    "Nation" leads one to believe that there are boundaries and isn't that the opposite of the goal?

    But, forgetting the utopia. That's probably already happening.
    Don't know why but I think there's a name for that already, it's called "New Babylon".

    It has been amusing reading radical ideas that in some odd twists of logic turn around and get trapped in conventions!

    If I can take meika's Internet Micro-nation further, I would say each of us are an Island Nation. We have our individual manifestos and our ways of governing ourselves independent of each other.

    The internet provides for Tentative Nations, happening from the overlap of our manifestos, whether it is between 2 or 200 or (n)x number of Island Nations, at any given time or simultaneously and for any unspecified duration.

    Conflict happens when we try to unify under a common law; specifically when we try to govern an other body.

    Google may take its battle for global domination to the high seas with the launch of its own “computer navy”.

    The company is considering deploying the supercomputers necessary to operate its internet search engines on barges anchored up to seven miles (11km) offshore.

    The “water-based data centres” would use wave energy to power and cool their computers, reducing Google’s costs. Their offshore status would also mean the company would no longer have to pay property taxes on its data centres,
