Just because something is possible doesn't mean there is anywhere near a real chance of it happening. There are heaps of articles online dispelling those fears.

As for providing the world with free renewable energy, there is no science stopping us from doing that. It's possible. You'll find that the reasons it isn't happening boil down to politics & economics. Money & power. :/
