I am curious, how many contributors at SpaceCollective are associated with research into neuroscience, artificial intelligence, or emergent complexity ? I see many new media artists and architects ( the art here is beautiful ), and I see much discussion of the future of scientific progress. What fraction of SpaceCollective comes from the scientific community ?
Am I correct in thinking that the focus of this community is discussion of the metaphysical and cultural implications of technology and possible futures? How committed is this group to maintaining a rational and scientific approach ? How conservative should I be with my speculations into the nature of consciousness and reality when writing to this community ?

Thought is information, and experience of information is nothing more than the existence of that information. Consciousness is a mathematical entity, to speak roughly. It has been implemented in life by chance, for the advantages is confers. Self awareness is by definition recursive, and arises directly from the recursive nature of the system : the mind implemented in the brain. Given a system designed to process information ( from environment to action), the creation of feedback on the system ( in primitive systems, physical action feeds back to sensory perception ) automatically, essentially
must create consciousness, to varying degrees of complexity. I no longer believe that there is a strict threshold for emergent complexity, consciousness occurs on a continuum.
