Danish design is known for producing some of the most useable and aesthetically pleasing objects enjoyed all around the world – manifesting the often-arbitrary principle of 'form follows function'. A few designers include Børge Mogensen, Finn Juhl, Hans Wegner, Arne Jacobsen, Poul Kjærholm, Poul Henningsen and Verner Panton. From the works of such designers, Danish design, amplified with a delicate, un-intrusive handling, is still innate within its functionality.

Denmark also owns Greenland, which is home to The Greenland Ice Sheet. The Greenland Ice Sheet is a vast body of ice covering roughly 80% of the surface of Greenland and is the second largest ice body in the world, after the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Greenland claims the purest water in the world is encapsulated within the Ice Sheet; crystalline water locked in the icecap for thousands of years, long before humans started pumping pollutants into the atmosphere. If this is so, Greenland, and thus Denmark, will obtain political superiority in the midst of the probable clean-water shortage. By branding "water" in this scenario, our project will adopt the cultural and political succulence of this country. Denmark water would be socially-intelligent, politically charged, individual and aesthetically divine.

    Water in Religion:
Water is considered a purifier in most religions.

Ablution is a term referring to washing, and can mean: a collection of regular activities taken to produce physical cleanliness, including washing but also tasks like oral hygiene, and shaving, or in religious terms, Ritual washing for the purpose of ritual purification.

Immersion (or aspersion or affusion) of a person in water is a central sacrament of Christianity (where it is called baptism). Baptism is a religious act of purification by water.
A ritual bath in pure water is performed for the dead in many religions including Judaism and Islam.

n Islam, the five daily prayers can be done in most cases after completing washing certain parts of the body using clean water (wudu). In Shinto, water is used in almost all rituals to cleanse a person or an area.

In the Bible, 2 Peter 3:5 states, "The earth was formed out of water and by water".

Some faiths use water especially prepared for religious purposes (holy water in some Christian denominations).

holy water is water which has been sanctified by a priest, or bishop for the purpose of baptism or for the blessing of persons, places or things.

Many religions also consider particular sources or bodies of water to be sacred or at least auspicious; examples include Lourdes in Roman Catholicism, the Jordan River (at least symbolically) in some Christian churches, the Zamzam Well in Islam and the River Ganges (among many others) in Hinduism.

So far, water is symbolic of purity, sanctity, healing.

    Water in Mythology:
Water is often believed to have spiritual powers.
In Celtic mythology, Sulis is the local goddess of thermal springs; in Hinduism, the Ganges is also personified as a goddess, while Saraswati have been referred to as goddess in Vedas

    goddess: a female deity;
deity: divine status, quality, or nature.

water is divine, w/ female qualities.

water is one of the (basic 5 elements, others including fire, earth, space, air).
In Islam, not only does water give life, but every life is itself made of water: "We made from water every living thing".

The Ancient Greek philosopher Empedocles held that water is one of the four classical elements along with fire, earth and air, and was regarded as the ylem, or basic substance of the universe.

Water also plays an important role in literature as a symbol of purification. Examples include the critical importance of a river in As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner and the drowning of Ophelia in Hamlet.

    Water in Culture:
Water and Culture are inseparable elements of human life. Culture shouldbe regarded as the permanently evolving set of distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual and emotionalfeatures of society or a social group. It encompasses – in addition to art and literature – lifestyles, ways of living together, value systems, traditions and beliefs. The way water is used and valued constitutes an integral part of a society’s cultural identity.

    Symbolism of Water:
Water unceasingly changes shapes and transforms itself. It is thus a model out of which everything can be born. Water, consequently, becomes a symbol of fertility that can be found in all the myths and all the religions. Beings and things are born of water. Water also possesses medicinal virtues. Some waters are recognized miraculous powers capable of healing the bodies.

It is also a source of purification. Purification for the individual beings but also for the whole of mankind. The Flood is a founding episode in numerous civilisations. Among Australia’s Aborigenes, a giant frog is said to have swallowed the Earth’s water to release it only when the other animals, dying with thirst, made it burst out laughing. The Flood in a re-creation of the world. One emerges from water in order to be reborn.

    Chemical and Physical:

    - Consists of two Hydrogen atoms polar-covalently bonded to an Oxygen atom at 104.45 degrees.
    - Although Oxygen shares an electron with each Hydrogen atom, it shares unequally, hogging the electrons a higher percentage of the time. This gives the "top" Oxygen portion of the molecule a slightly negative charge, and the opposite "bottom" Hydrogen ends a slightly positive charge.
    - Because of water's polar nature, it is a great solvent, commonly referred to as the "universal solvent".
    - Things that dissolve well in water (salts, sugars, acids, etc...) are referred to as "hydrophilic". Conversely, fats and oils are "hydrophobic". Even the proteins and DNA inside of our bodies, are bathed in water.
    - In moderate amounts, water is tasteless and colorless. However, in larger quantities is does have a slightly blue tint.
    - Water has high adhesion and surface tension because it is polar, however, it also falls victim to capillary motion (when it is more attracted to another substance than itself). Capillary motion occurs when water moves from areas of wet soil to dry soil, creates a meniscus in a tube, or the dripping of tear fluid away from the tear duct.
    - Water's high specific heat capacity is a large reason that the temperature on Earth remains fairly constant.
    - Even given water's benign characteristics, some substances like lithium and potassium react violently with water.

    Water in the Cosmos:

Here is a great breakdown from Wikipedia, "Water":

    Water vapor is on:
    • Mercury - 3.4% in the atmosphere
    • Venus - 0.002% in the atmosphere
    • Earth - trace in the atmosphere (varies with climate)
    • Mars - 0.03% in the atmosphere
    • Jupiter - 0.0004% in the atmosphere
    • Saturn - in ices only
    • Enceladus (moon of Saturn) - 91% in the atmosphere
    • exoplanets known as HD 189733 b[5] and HD 209458 b.[6]

    Liquid water is on:
    • Earth - 71% of surface
Strong evidence suggests that liquid water is present just under the surface of Saturn's moon Enceladus. Probably some liquid water is on Europa.

    Water ice is on:
    • Earth - mainly on ice sheets
    • polar ice caps on Mars
    • Titan
    • Europa
    • Enceladus

How does water make it around the cosmos?
    - It is thought that when stars form they create a shock wave of gas and debris. This wave impacts the gases already present in the environment and the impact creates heat, under which water it produced.

How do we detect water outside of Earth?
    - If you beam light at a far away planet's atmosphere, you can analyze the changes in the spectrum when it hits - different substances have different effects.

    Water on Earth:
    - 71% of Earth is water
    - 97.2% of Earth's water is located in the oceans
    - 90% of Earth's freshwater is locked in the Antarctic Ice Sheet
    - How "big" is all the water on Earth? Answer = 326,000,000 cubic miles
    - I'm pretty sure we all know about the water cycle, but here's a link just in casehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Water_cycle.png

    Some Interesting Water Properties:
    - Fog
    - Rainbows (refraction)
    - Tides
    - Ice is less dense that liquid water, so it floats. I think this is a funny fact because I like to image what all the beverage commercials would look like without the ice bubbling and floating refreshingly at the surface.

    ***CHEMICAL***

    • -removal of inorganic salts
      -common solvent in inorganic reactions
      -acceleration of diels-alder reactions

[SUPERCRITICAL FLUID: A supercritical fluid is any substance at a temperature and pressure above its thermodynamic critical point. A supercritical fluid has both the gaseous property of being able to penetrate anything, and the liquid property of being able to dissolve materials into their components. Used as a substitute for organic solvents. ]

-supercritical water: supercritical water oxidation used to oxidise hazardous waste, eliminating production of toxic combustion products which burning can produce. Also, oxygen-saturated supercritical water combusts organic pollutants efficiently.

    ***INDUSTRIAL***

-power generation: hydroelectricity produced by hydropower. Comes from water driving a turbine connected to a generator. (renewable, does not produce co2).
-water jet cutter: tool capable of slicing metal or other materials using a jet of water at high velocity and pressure. Used in a variety of industries, from mining to aerospace where it can be used to cut, shape, and carve materials.
-used to cool machinery to prevent overheating
-steam turbine: extracts thermal energy from pressurized steam and converts it into useful mechanical work. about 86% of all electric generation in the world is by the use of steam turbines.
-heat exchanger: A heat exchanger is a device in which energy is transferred from one fluid to another across a solid surface. They are widely used in space heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, power plants, chemical plants, petrochemical plants, petroleum refineries, and natural gas processing.

-pollution: Discharged untreated water from industrial uses. Discharged solutes is chemical pollution. Discharged coolant water is thermal pollution. Industry utilizes a variety of water purification processes both for use and discharge.

Our group has decided "water" to be the theme for the research phase of this new-branding expedition. Water is essential to all known forms of life, and without it, our existence would be nonexistent. The human body is anywhere from 55% to 78% water..."everything living is
just a complication of the water molecule."

In beginning our research, We've begun to investigate known brands of bottled water, mainly to understand the marketing and technique behind these major corporations. In this, we will be able to understand the positive themes of the "product" as well as knowing what to avoid.

    These brands include:

    • Aquafina

    • BRITA (a household water purifier, but essentially the same idea)

    • Dasani

    • Evian

    • Fiji

    • and many more...

Every brand claims to have the purest, freshest-tasting water available. Thus, purity becomes an ideal, or symbol for what water is / can me for humanity. We will also research other states / uses of the water molecule, including: solid water as ice, condensed water vapor as clouds and the chemical uses.

Water, in all its forms, is capable of tapping into, connecting to our own human existence; however, can water be the machinic phylum for all entities on earth?

To initiate the research of the project, we researched what Machinic Phylym essentially "is", and how it pertains to the recreation of the voyager golden disk. The difficulty in this research is that, in itself, Machinic Phylum cannot be defined as clearly as one would hope. Nonetheless, we were able to define, on a somewhat vague and ambiguous scale, what this concept is and how it can be applied:

    • There are two different meanings of the term, but in its more general sense, it refers to any process in which order emerges out of chaos as a result of its nonlinear dynamics, and by the other hand, is “the flow of matter-movement, the flow of matter in continuous variation, conveying in singularities.” The machine phylum is not a life-force, since is older than life, and constitutes a form of non-organic life. Nevertheless, the self-organization of chemical clocks, multi-cellular organisms or nest-building insect colonies is deeply related to the Machinic phylum.

When applied, Machinic Phylum relates "living things", such as humans, to "non living things" - the rocks, lava or flames...things we associate as life-less. One and the same material "phylum" could be "folded and stretched" to yield all the different structures that inhabit our universe", connecting the earth like one enormous network.

This concept frees us, the designers, from the limit of the human perspective. If Machinic Phylum holds as valid, we have the ability to design from the perspective of a rock, or tree, wind, and will still have the ability to connect our own human existence, tying in as one. Humans are no longer the focus of the story, but only a piece of the whole.
