    Like AI (artificial intelligence), robots have been designed and constructed for decades as human-inspired four-limbed bodies with head. In my POV, this human replication has stucked the whole evolution of AI - and robos. AIs are extremely better to solve close-circuited problems like chess than human brains. But when it comes to decide whether to go outside when it's raining, and how much there could rain and still go to out, they are and will be incredibly dumb. Modern AI (like self-organizing maps) is another topic, this was just an introduction how humans still think their artificial replication for creating them - to their own shape and functions. So unimaginative :)

    Robos @ Home

    Let's start from home first. A robot is very handy to clean surfaces of home like tables, kitchen sink and bath tube. There might be some remains of liquids, like red wine, but do we actually have dust in future homes? At least, after miniatyrization and digital artefacts, we need less and less book/video/audio-shelves and other furnitures like monolithic home theater kits. More probably, we have some human-resistant bacterias living with us keeping all the surfaces always clean and hygienic and robo vacuum cleaners like Trilobite of Electrolux handle the rest if needed.

    Robots are handy to carry food and other house items from front door to kitchen and so. But in future, how many of us need so much food to carry in? At least, in middle class homes protein (vat or in vitro meat) and other nourishment will be grown in neat and fashionable designed tanks or so. With 3D fabbing and raw materials, it is handy to fab every snacks form from ice cream to energy sticks.

    Obviously, for elder people robots will very handy to assist to moving around home and out of it. But again, is human-size robot the best form to assist? Maybe just some muscle and bone enhancements and boosters from DARPA to consumer usage. Or something like Revolutionizing Prosthetics of DARPA. Actually, one can claim that, in the future, DARPA is one of the most known brand to solve all kind of daily things after it has piloted its wares first in battle fields with kyber soldiers :) Many innovations have happened to come to consumer markets from military and black-op use.

    Even nowadays, many people are talking to their plants when alone. Wouldn't it be more nice to talk to a plant if a plant'd talk back to you compared to some silly tincan sitting in your favourite armchair like an educated shrink? There could be talking plants - in some level - but anyway it might be more attractive to speak to beautiful plants than to Trilobites (althought rumours say that it is quite common to talk to Trilobites already in USA).

    Naturally, there will be various sensitive usage of androids, like Japanese sex dolls (Reuters 01:41). More about robosex industry in SpaceCollective in Cheap Robots by BenRayfield.

    Robos @ Work

    Without a doubt, robots will replace simple work versatilely from agriculture to industries and in some service sectors (if not self-serviced, like aeroplane check-ins). This will cause a lot of unemployment among the low class workers, illegal immigrants and so, but the consequences are another issue. Again, are human-like robots the most suitables to cope in there works or professions?

    Homeless Street Robos

    Robo artist Frank Garvey has made insightful approach to the one scenario of the future of robos in his OmniCircus like Goboy (beggar robot 1992) and Humper (robotic whore 1994 with Carl Pisaturo). In my POV, Garvey shows how it might be when stand-alone, more or less-brained robots are fully integrated to society. Hitek will always drop its price when appearing to mass market.

    So, fastforwarding some decades and robots available to every home, or at least almost every. Robots will be dumped to streets after malfunctions or just be put on the streets to earn and make professions human beings made earlier.

    On the streets, there might be continuous darwinian Survival of the fittest - humans vs. newcomers. It is hard to imagine how these poor, adandoned, crippled human-like robos will survive. Of course, it is possible that some humble people might emphatize this new Les Carbon Misérables and install - or donate - to them some M.A.R.K. 13 gear to defend itselves =)

    Personally I think that the future and shapes of (autonomous) robots looms on the adopting and replicating from nature, not from human beings, as recent development of robots shows, like robo colibri, spider and worm robos and autonomous flying robo swarms.

    Some thoughts about miniatyrization and the Internet of Things (IoT) inspired by U.S. Internet suitcase survival kit.

    As The New York Times told, U.S. is developing Internet in a suitcase. The idea is to create instant stealth wireless networks that would enable activists to communicate outside the reach of governments in countries like Iran, Syria and Libya.

    Phone as a server

    Andrew Lippman at MIT Media Lab has written much about viral communication and networks. One of his idea is, that mobile devices could be servers at the same time like peer-to-peer swapping networks on the Internet and there would besically no need to mobile transmitting towers or telecom operators. The only disadvantage with this kind of network is, that it will be reachable only in the area where there are enough cells (or devices) to keep network up'n'running.

    Internet in a suitcase seems to fill that gap. If the communication networks are (shut) down for example in country level, like in Iran 2009 and Egypt 2011, there would be instant Internet servers and communication servers with this project.

    But there are other uses for Internet suitcase also. After Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans 2005, there were many common citizens restoring instant and local Internet internet infrastructure, ham radios and other means of communication while the public sector of U.S. was incapable to do almost nothing for several days.

    Instant infrastructure, just add a water

    There are several interesting feature with The Official Internet Suitcase. First, why create jus a communication kit? Internet of Things (IoT) offers many possibilities to get intel from physical places. With IPv6, every pieces of the Internet suitcase equipment could have their own IP-address. They could sense the environment, for example to track soldiers and military vehicles. For example, instead of just spreading bombs, NATO could has bombed Libya with tiny Internet trackers scattering them around Libya. These transmitters could change intel together for rebels and NATO command center.

    Collapsed technical infrastructure is just not for communication and delivering basic needs, like electricity. Centralized infrastructure is actually the nerve system of 'modern' society. If it somehow collapses, modern society freezes.

    On the other hand, I've seen, read and heard about countless cases about setting temporary infrastructure, like Konemetsä techno raves in wood in Finland. One of the biggest temporary infrastructure invasion was at Seattle 1999, where globalists de facto created another communication ad hoc infrastructure beside the official - and also used the official version. Nowadays, for example in urban riots or in summer party, it is just a matter of minutes to set up live video stream (Bambuser), announce about the gathering in Twitter and Facebook etc, organize it in wikis and Etherpad etc. Actually, there have been several "Internet suitcases" for years already, U.S. is just innovating an easy-to-use consumer version of them.

    But in the future, this is not just a matter of silicon. After some serious biohacking during next decades, I suppose that it is possible to carry lightweight food, for example. And get the electricity from the sky. And. like food, to carry some bio-based material as camping settlements.

    In the future of wars and catastrophes, it is possible to reinfrastructure the targeted physical area very quickly, remotely or on the places, friendly of hostily. Which actually means a society in suitcase and later in pill box. Again, this inspires to several thoughts :)

    Hi,

    I'm Kari A. Hintikka, Finnish foresighter, fact book and *punk writer, concept and usability designer, retired kyberpunker (long live mirrorshades Bi ). During last twenty years on thee Net, I've mostly done my stuff in Finnish. I'm making my PhD about netcrowds e.g. how people on thee Net self-organize themselves to reach mutually agreed complex goals and tasks, like Net detectives or how people arranged themselves to survive and reconstruct the infrastructure after Katrina hurricane 2005 when the official bodies just didn't know what to do.

    At the moment I'm writing a biopunk story The Metabolist, around in year 2075, when - maybe - the molecular and biotechnologies have replaced current silicon-based tech and how it might change all, again :) I suppose I publish here both semiacademic 'fact' thoughts and guesses of foresighting and some fiction excerpts from The Metabolist story. The base atmospshere of The Metabolist I try to humble reach is the footsteps of Dick, Ellroy, Gibson, Rucker, Sterling, Thompson, the usual suspects :) In leisure time, I'm compose industrial spaghettiwestern music http://www.ubiq.fi  and in summer, nursering my japanese tea garden.

    As a newbie, it's always polite to tell something about topic, interests and motives. I'm a holistic far out phreak, interested in everything: Make-your-mammals home growing kit, Delta Pearl plan to create a megapolis of some 150 million inhabitants in China, self-organizing maps, collective intelligence, constructed and virtual identities, social experiment to simulate Mars flight in Russia, media ecology on thee Net (semantic viruses etc.), HP:s CeNSE global sensor and tracking system, synthetic biology, how noise and buzz start to filter to data and the to information in Twitter, just to name a few.

    But with human communication and thoughts, I'm a oldskooler. In Facebook, for example, I'm actively because it's one of my work place to make observations and interpretations. But basically I appreciate long thoughts and that someony has put time and brains to express herself or himself.

    That's the reason I asked an invitation to SpaceCollective. I'm very pleased to the collective for accepting me. To meet people for talking for example about body artist Stelarc or how Nikola Tesla borrowed - but didn't remember to ask beforehand - some electricity from the city of New York for making some personal experiments =)
