Maybe flags in the future will be holographic or have binary information encoded into them. Or perhaps some sort of RFID technology embedded into it so it can "talk" from a long distance. I would imagine that many alien civilizations developed flags of their own as a natural part of the development of language, writing systems, and the evolution of social identity. A flag represents a habit of shared values and history, a sort of mandala of who we were, who we are, and where we want to go. And ideally, it will represent something good. :)
