The real point that I am trying to make in this article is at the end: we should develop a free, unregulated, decentralised, distributed, P2P Internet based entirely on open source software. This was our dream in the 90s and this is what we should be doing now. Less complaining and more coding, for fuck's sake.
It is obvious that companies will always put profit above anything else, and it is obvious that governments will always put control freakery above anything else. We need an open internet built by-the-people, for-the-people.
