It is indeed amazing, when you think about it, 20 years ago when the internet was just getting popular we had not even the slightest clue what it was going to turn in to. Look at it's current state now, as you mentioned it, the implications it has on politics and commerce are massive. We also see how it affects our lives and mentality. All of a sudden we have answers to our questions, we are no longer alone or not entertained. You can reach to the other, he is no longer a stranger, the other becomes a internet friend. That is really a great thing that internet enabled us to do.

However not all the users of the internet are actively engaged connecting with people and expressing themselves. There are also many who just consume content. Look at how many websites with brainless entertainment content are out there and the amount of traffic they get. Or the porn sites. They get a huge chunk of traffic I reckon more than half of the traffic made on the internet is made on this type of websites; which unfortunately do not encourage their users's desires they are just exploiting them by serving them content that addresses some basic human drives, like constant novelty and sex. It makes them weak and undermines their freewill. Here is where I see a sort of matrix scenario. Or maybe is just natural selection 2.0 empowered by the internet.

You mentioned our hopes are the young generation. Indeed kids have incisive minds, they can hack and tweak existent technologies naturally; they learn to code and express themselves with ease. they are also born with a better bullshit filter then us I think.
