    The BioSub - underwater living
Project: Design Media Arts at UCLA

If you’re into diving, then it’s pretty much a given that you’re into life underwater. But I think I may have run across the person who’s MORE into life underwater than anybody else. His name is Lloyd Godson; he’s a marine scientist and avid diver. Recently awarded the Australian Geographic “Live your dream” Wildest Adventure Competition, Lloyd plans to “live his dream” completely underwater in the BioSUB Project: the world’s first self-sufficient, self-sustaining underwater habitat.

Construction begins this spring on the BioSUB, and Lloyd hopes to move in by August. While living in the BioSUB, Lloyd will need to generate his oxygen (by growing plants); grow his food (using hydroponics); arrange for his fresh water; and deal with his waste while he lives in The Pit, a gravel quarry that now serves as a dedicated occupational dive site in Australia. Equal parts adventure story, ecological research lab, and human guinea pig, Lloyd and his BioSUB will push the envelope in terms of living in a closed ecological system.
