Empty Canvas and The Genesis of An Image

The painter does not paint on a virgin canvas.
The writer does not write on a blank page. But, the page or the canvas are already covered over with pre-existing, pre-established cliches. (habits of sight & habits of thought).

The cliches must be scraped away to find a singular vital space of possibility.
For cliche is precisely what prevents the genesis of an image.
(just as opinion & convention prevent the genesis of thought).

The painter does not need to cover a blank canvas, but on the contrary, to empty the canvas of all these 'givens' that are present in it .. (these cliches and ready made perceptions, actual or virtual), for one can really think only where what is to be thought is not already given.

This is a nice and thought provoking one Syncopath. Two questions come to mind:

    1. Is something a video just on account of being published on Youtube ? Or does something need to be actually constituted from frames-with-a-difference (pixels actually changing) to be a video ?

    2. How can a canvas be empty if it is already invested with an expectation of finding 'a singular vital space of possibility'? Cliche , habit, and convention indeed need to be scraped away, but is that all? Shouldn't the painter let art itself die, and himself be forgotten for the canvas to be empty? This seems to be a violent paradox.

Thanks Spaceweaver for your awaking reflections.
    1. With all the respect to YouTube, no, being published on YT cannot be an adequate definition for what is a video. To define "video" is not a trivial task (as it would be with any attempt to assign a complete definition to any-thing)).
Video - from Latin Videre - to see - possible definition as appear in the dictionary will be:
"relating to or employed in the transmission or reception of a televised image".

For me, video is a visual representation that accents differences by moving between images that are in motion with images that look as if they are not. This, together with the possibility of sound, introduce Time into the story in motion (a dimension, which does not exist, as commonly accepted, in a painting or a picture). Dealing with video is especially challenging, to my mind, mainly because of the correlation it presents to the semi independent stream of pictures, that constantly moves, changes, connects, disconnects, appears & disappears on our cognitive "screen" (on a private and on a collective one as well).

    2. A canvas cannot be empty, and there is no one single space (on earth or in mind) that is not invested with an expectation !! I have much resonance with your description as for the necessary death of art and the fate of the artist being forgotten for the remote possibility of the canvas to be empty.... Yet, i think we should remember that ALL the descriptive attempts above are mere trials to point to a possible "sense" that cannot be fully contoured within any linguistic limits of content and of meaning implication. A violent paradox indeed, because even if we apply the most radical way of wording (as of the death of Art itself) or any other even more extreme (is there?) and we will not agree to be satisfied with just scraping the canvas - even then, we will be left with some-thing, not? even then, some-thing will be left, and it will be yet again a better or a lesser approximation to an "empty canvas" (which is again a mere pointer towards some-thing or some sense of something). I think that we (Humans) find ourselves in a quasi state that is always partially thirsty for an intelligent explanation (of the universe) mostly verbal of-course, and exhaustedly thirsty for an encounter with a non linguistic presentation (of the same universe). Is there a non linguistic presentation ? ...

Deleuze says: "How can we see what we did not see before?" - I think that this Q mark presents a long lasting riddle and a mystery in our trial to unravel cognition. And how to prepare a "canvas" or a "screen" or a "cognitive mind" to be susceptible to this impossible possibility, though many and varied are the proposed approaches, is still left, as scientific as mystic as magical.
