Project: Emergence and Navigating Space
After looking at some of Karl Sim’s work I was very interested in the way he produces virtual organisms that simulate the growth and behavior of a real organism. In Galapagos, the organisms mutate, reproduce if frequently selected, or disappear if not selected. Because it is an interactive installation, the more the people select their idea of an aesthetically interesting organism, the more complex the organism becomes. For this emergence project I plan on incorporating his idea of mutation into a simpler processing concept. In the image below Karl Sims shows an example of his process called “Choreographed Image Flow.” This process creates a “fluid-like motion to animate two dimensional images. Techniques are presented for generating these animations by repeatedly warping images…”
I would like to incorporate the idea of warping an image to create a more fluid motion to resemble his idea for Galapagos by simulating growth and behaviors of an organism. The distorted circular objects can resemble an organism. As one clicks on it, it can either mutate, reproduce, or be removed. As the person selects the object more frequently, it mutates and becomes a more complex structure, whereas if the person ignores and it, it will slowly become more simplified and eventually disappear. When I first saw this picture I really enjoyed his use of color because it resembles a type of paper marbling or the inside a lava lamp, or even a Japanese painting. The use of the shades of greens and blues give a mystical approach to this computer generated process. So for my project I would like it look as if it’s natural, flowing organism instead of something that looks totally computer generated.
